Idiot Joe Walsh: Pregnancy Never Endangers The Mother’s Life

This is how much I know about the female body!

Life in Republicanland must be wonderful. It doesn’t matter what your position on any topic is, there’s always right wing science to back it up! Don’t like the idea of capping carbon emissions? Right wing science says man-made Climate Change doesn’t exist! Find the idea that you’re descended from apes to be offensive? Right wing science says you were made in God’s image only 6000 years ago! Smoking causes cancer? Not according to right wing science! True, the vast majority of scientists don’t actually agree with right wing science and have a mountain of data that says all of right wing science is completely wrong but those people are elitist liberals with college educations.

Ignore them.

The latest example of this amazing phenomena is Joe Walsh, the (thankfully) soon to be ex-Representative  from Illinois. Last night, in his final debate with his replacement, Tammy Duckworth, Joe Walsh dropped this gem of stupidity:

Walsh said he was against abortion “without exception,” including rape, incest and in cases in which the life or health of the mother was in jeopardy.

Asked by reporters after the debate if he was saying that it’s never medically necessary to conduct an abortion to save the life of a mother, Walsh responded, “Absolutely.”

“With modern technology and science, you can’t find one instance,” he said. “… There is no such exception as life of the mother, and as far as health of the mother, same thing.”

Keep in mind, this was not said in the heat of the moment during a debate, this was afterwards when he was asked for a clarification. So, to be clear: Joe Walsh thinks that, due to the magic of modern medicine, a pregnancy can never threaten the life or health of the mother.

Perhaps Walsh is unaware of the fact that Rick Santorum’s wife had a life saving abortion? Or has never heard of an ectopic pregnancy where the fetus starts to grow outside the womb and is almost invariably fatal if not aborted? I personally know two women with blood pressure so high that their doctor has informed them that a pregnancy would kill them.

Obviously, Joe Walsh is an idiot. It wouldn’t matter if someone explained it to him, though. After all, right wing science supports his position.

The stakes in next month’s election are nothing less than voting for the party that lives in the real world versus the party that lives in a fantasy world where any information that does not fit their narrative is discarded and ignored.
