Facebook may be illicitly endorsing Mitt Romney as president in an uniquely unethical way — moving him up on the search results page. Despite Barack Obama having 31,462,753 “likes” on the extremely popular social media website compared to Mitt Romney’s 11,036,891 “likes,” a search for “Barack Obama” doesn’t show Obama’s page as the top result; in fact, it shows Romney’s above it, as seen below:
You’ll notice that Mitt Romney’s page is listed in the “sponsored” section, which is reserved for ads. Because “Barack Obama” is a political search and Romney’s page is being promoted as political, Romney’s page appears in the results list. However, Barack Obama’s page does not appear when you do the same search in reverse; instead, Paul Ryan, Romney’s running mate, has his page appearing:
Is this acceptable? It could be written off as mere coincidence, but Facebook has a reputation by now of attacking liberal pages, blogs, banning administrators of liberal pages and profiles of liberal activists. This might be innocent coincidence; however, all evidence points to the contrary. Are these attacks acceptable? They certainly aren’t ethical.
