Oh, I’m sorry! I meant “observation.” Via Huffington Post:
Poll watchers from groups ostensibly targeting voter fraud are headed primarily to minority voting precincts on Election Day, lending support to the argument that their real goal is to suppress the African-American and Latino vote.
A partial list of precincts targeted by a Pittsburgh Tea Party group working on behalf of the Republican Party shows that nearly 80 percent of the voters in those precincts are African-American, compared to 13 percent countywide, according to civil rights and union groups who on Monday called on the U.S. Department of Justice to investigate.
An Ohio political blog is reporting that forms submitted to election officials by Tea Party spin-off group True the Vote in Franklin County — which includes Columbus — show poll watchers heading to 28 precincts, where most voters are African-American. Overall, the county electorate is 20 percent African-American.
This is so brazen it almost defies description. The only thing left is for the “professionally concerned private citizens” to show up in white hoods holding nooses. Not about race? Riiiiight…and asking about Obama’s birth certificate was a legitimate concern.
The fact that the largest of these groups, True the Vote, is being investigated for a criminal conspiracy to suppress minority votes is irrelevant to these latter day brown shirts; the only thing that matters is disrupting the voting process for as many “undesirables” as possible. In Florida, Republican Governor Rick Scott has all but told early voters to get lost. In Ohio, Republican Secretary of State Jon Husted has repeatedly defied the courts to continue his efforts to cut early voting, confuse voters, and throw out as many ballots as he can.
None of these efforts are meant to be permanent. It’s like a marathon runner that pushes themselves over the limit. It doesn’t matter what happens afterwards, the only thing that matters is getting to the finish line. Criminal investigations? Arrests? Jail time? Scandals? Congressional hearings? Who cares?! All that matters is interfering with the election. Disenfranchise as many people as possible. Lie, cheat and steal as much as you can in the time you have left. The lawyers can clean up the mess later and, by then, it will be too late. The damage is done. No backsies! It worked in 2000. It worked again in 2004. The conventional wisdom is that it didn’t work in 2008 because Obama was SO far ahead of McCain that no amount of shenanigans could fix that.
And honestly? They don’t expect to win this time either. What they are hoping for is to make the popular vote so close they can claim that Obama does not have a mandate in order to justify four more years of obstructionism. The number of “irregularities” will be fodder for the right wing media machine to claim the election was secretly stolen, perhaps by zombie ACORN. Never mind that most (all) of the irregularities favored Republicans, it’s a conspiracy!
This is why every vote will count on Election Day. EVERY vote. Even those in deep blue states. The more Obama votes there are, the harder it will be for the GOP to mess wit the popular vote. If you weren’t planning on voting, shame on you! Get out there and give America 4 more years of what it needs!
