Election Day 2012 won’t be a day 21-year-old Galicia Malone will soon forget. Not only is Nov. 6 the first time Galicia cast a ballot – it also is the day that she gave birth.
Galicia began labor this morning at 3:00am. Despite being in active labor with contractions five minutes apart when the polls opened, she toughed it out and went to vote before going to the hospital. She cast her ballot at (no joke) New Life Celebration Church, located in south suburban Chicago.
As Galicia worked her way through the ballot, her contractions increased in frequency and intensity, reported WBBM Newsradio’s Regine Schlesinger, who spoke with Galicia.
“I was just trying to read and breathe, read and breathe,” she told Schlesinger. “That’s what I kept telling myself, ‘Read and breathe, read and breathe.’” Galicia finished voting, and then drove herself to the hospital.
We can’t know for sure which way Galicia voted – but I am willing to bet, as a youthful and enthusiastic Chicago resident, she voted for Obama. And I would have said that had she been white, too.
It appears that, despite what the Romney camp is reporting, Obama supporters have the edge on voting enthusiasm.
Personally, I hope Galicia considers working “Obama” into her new daughter’s name.
