FUN FACT: Obama Lost in Every State with a Voter Photo-ID Law
While it sounds incredible, even a casual check finds it is not true.
According to the National Conference of State Legislatures, there are 11 states with a Photo ID law on the books, with an additional 19 states with an ID requirement not tied to a Photo ID.
The 11 states with a Photo ID requirement are (States Obama won in bold):
- New Hampshire
- South Dakota
Out of 11 states with Photo ID requirements, Obama carried 4 of them, a solid 22%.
Out of the 19 with ID requirements, but not Photo IDs, you have the following (again, states Obama carried are in bold):
- Rhode Island
- South Carolina
- North Dakota
Now, on the linked article above, they ask what does a non-Photo ID requirement means. As a resident of one of these non-Photo ID states, Washington, I can tell you what it means. It means that we issue specific Voter ID’s you can use in lieu of a photo ID such as a drivers license, for voting. To get this Voter ID you need to validate your residence, such as having your name on a lease or mortgage, using your drivers license or state issued ID, a utility bill, even an affidavit from a state worker or officer.
In other words, while you may not need a photo ID directly to get your ballot, you still need one in order to vote. Our ballots require a signature, which is cross-checked against our on-file signature from when we registered to vote.
So, out of the 30 states with Voter ID requirements, Obama carried 11 — just over 30% — of them. Instead of blaming the system, perhaps the Republican party should study why it was that they lost. The party has lost touch with American values, and are living in a fantasy land.
If they do not wake up soon, there will not be any more GOP by the next election.
