Nearly every morning Shena Hardin would take a little detour to avoid a school bus picking up children. When faced with flashing school bus lights, Hardin simply veered onto the sidewalk, passing within inches of the door of a childcare center, to get to where she was going quickly.
Determined to put a stop to the reckless behavior he witnessed on a routine basis, school bus driver Uriah Herron filmed Hardin one morning and gave it to police. Hardin was then charged with not stopping for a school bus and reckless driving.
She was sentenced on Nov. 5 by a judge who has a unique way of meting out justice. In addition to suspending Hardin’s license for 30 days and assigning a $250 fine, a Cleveland municipal judge ordered Hardin to stand at a prominent intersection two days next week holding a 22” x 22” sign with the words “only an idiot would drive on the sidewalk to avoid a school bus” in all-caps. The offender will have to hold the sign on two different mornings from 7:45 to 8:45 am.
The judge also reprimanded Hardin for not showing any remorse during the trial.
And, in case you were wondering, this verdict is not racist by any means – the person receiving the verdict is a black woman, and the judge determining the sentence is also…a black woman.
