It wasn’t that the GOP declared a war on women, poverty, Latinos, Medicare, income equality, the LGBT community and Blacks. It wasn’t that Mitt Romney couldn’t keep a single position for more than 24 hours before reversing it. It wasn’t that Fox News and the right-wing media machine created an impenetrable bubble of lies and fears. It wasn’t that the GOP base is filled with racist nutbags that think the moon landing was a conspiracy by Obama to spread Sharia law to the stars.
If there was one thing I would have wished Paul Ryan to say, it would be this. There is one single way to interpret what he thinks happened: One of the “best and brightest” of the GOP has learned absolutely nothing from the election. He did not learn that attacking the poor pisses them off. He did not learn that rape is rape or, in the words of Bush adviser, Karen Hughes, “if another Republican man says anything about rape other than it is a horrific, violent crime, I want to personally cut out his tongue.” He did not learn that trying to destroy the social safety net of Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid is extremely unpopular. He did not learn that using racist dog whistles like “the urban vote” do not go unheard by minorities and non-racists. We hear it and we are disgusted.
Paul Ryan did not learn a thing. That means he’ll want to stay the course or, better yet, go further to the right. More severe conservatism! More Christianity! More Ayn Randian “self-interest!” More
White Power racism ignorance of changing demographics!
Let’s all wish Paul Ryan success in his future endeavors to appeal to the “urban vote.” Maybe he can relate to them by washing a few more dishes and then cancelling school lunches and shutting down Planned Parenthood. That should do it!
