A white supremacist rally in North Carolina took a funny turn when protesters were outnumbered five to one by red-nosed, squeaky toyed clowns.
The rally, which took place in Charlotte over the weekend, was refreshingly small, with only about 50 protesters who comprised both the National Socialist Movement and the local KKK. More newsworthy were the counter protesters, who drowned out the hate group with horns and squeaky toys. Every time the protesters chanted, “White Power,” the clowns filled the air with white flour. One counter protester held a sign saying “Wife Power.”
The counter-protest was put on by North Carolina’s Latin American Coalition, or La Coalición, who according to their website is,
a community of Latin Americans, immigrants and allies that promotes full and equal participation of all people in the civic, economic and cultural life of North Carolina through education, celebration and advocacy.
“The message from us is, you look silly,” said Lacey Williams, the youth coordinator for Charlotte’s Latin American Coalition. “We’re dressed like clowns and you’re the ones that look funny.”
Protestor Tom Strini donned his red nose and rainbow wig to take an opposing point of view.
“Instead of meeting hate with hate, they were going to meet hate with love,” said Strini of the protestors.
“I think it’s really important to have a sense of humor,” added Williams. “What they want is for us to fight them. They want us to hit them with hate. We can’t become them.”
Overall, the protest was quite peaceful. It was reported that the 75 or so police officers present barely had to move and that the white supremacists eventually gave up before being escorted to their cars by the police. There were no arrests.
