Some news stories just make your heart hurt. Henry Hamilton, a 64-year-old Key West, Florida resident, was so furious and inconsolable after Obama was re-elected that he apparently took his own life. One of Mr. Hamilton’s friends was concerned about his deepening depression, anxiety, and some erratic behaviors. He asked local police to make regular welfare checks on Hamilton, and they obliged.
Officer Pablo Rodriguez stopped by Hamilton’s condo at about 11 AM on November 8th and woke Hamilton’s roommate and partner of 11 years, Michael Cossey. The two men went to Hamilton’s bedroom to check on him, and saw that he was on his back in the middle of his bed with his left arm flung over his face, and with several opened bottles of Mr. Cossey’s prescription pills in a nearby room. Sadly, they discovered that Mr. Hamilton was already deceased.
Found on his bathroom sink was a copy of his living will on which was handwritten, “Do not revive! F— Obama!” according to police reports.
Hamilton had been […] “very upset” with the outcome of the Nov. 6 presidential election, his partner told police. “If Barack gets re-elected, I’m not going to be around,” Hamilton had said, according to his partner of 11 years, Michael Cossey, who spoke to police.
A detective found three prescription bottles in the dining room: one empty bottle for 1 milligram Alprazolams, one empty bottle for 150 milligram Seroquels and another bottle for 50-milligram Seroquels that still had pills inside, reports say. Alprazolam is also known as Xanax. Seroquel is used to treat insomnia and bipolar disorder, according to drugs.com. Those medications, however, were prescribed to Cossey, [who] said he did not believe Hamilton ingested those pills, but that he may have taken other pills and drunk alcohol.
Mr. Cossey reports that the last time he spoke with Mr. Hamilton was November 6th, “when we watched the election results.” The night prior to Mr. Hamilton’s suicide, Mr. Cossey was out very late playing cards with friends and fell asleep on the couch when he returned home at daybreak.
David Edwards at Raw Story adds:
Cossey said that Hamilton had been […] “very stressed about his business.” Hamilton was the owner of Tropical Tan off Duval Street, which may have been hit with a 10 percent excise tax by President Barack Obama’s Affordable Care Act.
Police spokesperson Alyson Crean said that autopsy results would determine the official cause of death but there was “absolutely no evidence of foul play.”
You may remember Sen. John McCain–who apparently hates Obama with the fire of a thousand burning suns–commiserating with Jersey Shore reality show muppet “Snooki” on Twitter over this tanning salon excise tax.
Interestingly enough, posters on Sean Hannity’s forums expressed not only sadness for Mr. Hamilton, but also made some pointed criticisms of the media, which they seemed to think might have unnecessarily further agitated an unhappy man with a fragile state of mind:
superjames1992: “Some people take this stuff WAY too seriously. It sounds like he had schizophrenia, though.”
Independent Mind: “I wonder why the thought that the re-election of the President is doomsday for America. I mean it didn’t happen in the first 4 years, what the heck scared him that he felt living wasn’t an option.”
mobiusptc: “what is ****ing wrong with people.”
camarozz: “Some people are unbalanced, its hard to say what it was. Could be he was listening too much to the dumbass media instead of focusing on what he needed to do to get things going again. It’s called extreme point of views and paying attention to all the fatalists instead of realizing that we all have to deal with our demons and move forward with what we have.”
PeterGriffin: “I know this might sound like crazy talk, but maybe having an entire conservative media apparatus blaring 24/7 TYRANNY and END OF AMERICA and YARGLE BLARGLE about Democrats just might push some people over the edge.”
indemiddle: “Bless his soul.”
camarozz: “Obviously he couldn’t wade through the garbage to get to the truth; unfortunately there is very little truth anymore. Its been replaced with sensationalism. No, the Dems are not innocent of this either.”
poorblackman: “The feeble minded actually take political rhetoric seriously. This is how small things erupt into massive civil unrest.”
The important thing to keep in mind is that Mr. Hamilton’s loved ones and friends are grieving over losing him, and not trying to shift blame around to The Media or Fox News or Politics or whatever. It’s tragic and sad.
