Linda McMahon, of World Wrestling Entertainment, has made a habit of spending a ton of money every few years to losing elections. It seems to be settling in as a bi-annual tradition in her home state of Connecticut to have voters rejecting her at the ballot box. In two years I suppose they will start decorating trees on election day in memory of having rejected her at the ballot box, or perhaps exchange small gifts.
However with the close of this election, Linda McMahon’s campaign made a big error. They sent out paychecks which in turn bounced. WNTH in New Haven, CT covered this story as it broke:
When the campaign issued new checks, at least one got a surprise in his envelope. He reported:
“Basically he handed me a check with a condom in it, told me I was screwed. That’s the rudest gesture you can ever do to a person, it’s like spitting in a person’s face.”
How classy of the campaign. Many of the checks which had bounced had been cashed at check cashing places around the area, giving a sign of the economic status of the people working on the McMahon campaign. Check cashing stores are effectively the bank of last resort, used only by the poorest of the poor, and are many times considered predatory. They do however provide a service which once filled by the Post Office Savings System, made redundant thanks to laws such as Glass-Steagall. The harm to them in return hurts those who can least afford it.
Although, Mrs. McMahon is herself known for being a class act, being the head of World Wrestling Entertainment. As part of the organization which oversees what is effectively testosterone soap operas, she has made a media empire the envy of many. But when she turns to politics, the same antics as displayed on the media companies broadcasts does not work. One thing that must always be done is assuring her workers of their paychecks. This action will harm her future run in 2014 which we all know is coming. The politics bug has bitten the woman, and the desire for power has now driven her to not one, but two defeats at the ballot box might make her reconsider.
Wrestling is popular entertainment, but politics is a real blood sport, and Mrs. McMahon is demonstrating that she remains unprepared for what it takes to not only run for office, but to win it.
