Florida Man Shoots, Kills Teen Over Loud Music

In what many are already likening to the infamous case of Trayvon Martin and George Zimmerman, Michael Dunn, 45, has been arrested for the murder of 17-year-old Jordan Davis over loud music the teen and his friends were playing from an SUV. He has also been apparently charged with attempted murder of the other individuals in the vehicle.

The incident took place at a gas station on Southside Boulevard in Jacksonville, Florida. First Coast News reports,

Lt. Clifford Ferguson from the Brevard County Sheriff’s office says Dunn was arrested around 11 a.m. Saturday on an out of county warrant from Jacksonville on murder and attempted murder charges.

He is believed to be the suspect who shot and killed Jordan Davis, 17, at the Gate gas station on Southside Boulevard Friday, all because of what police say was an altercation over loud music.

“They were putting up police tape and everybody was curious as to what happened. Everybody just heard someone had been shot and for awhile we weren’t sure why but then we ended up hearing it was over the music,” says Tiffany Randle, a local worker.

A blog on the Miami New Times website also weighs in:

Dunn was driving in a dark colored sedan, and allegedly got into an argument with the teens over the music.

Details are still sketchy at this point, but Dunn allegedly then pulled out a gun and fired several shots at the SUV. One of the bullets hit Davis. The teen was taken to a nearby hospital, but was later pronounced dead.

The case seems to have a possible element (read: undertone) of racial inspiration, although our saying such is only conjecture and there is no evidence at this point to that effect. However, unlike the Trayvon Martin case, this seems relatively clear-cut, with multiple witnesses. At this point it isn’t clear what exactly causes someone to go from arguing about the loudness of music to firing shots at a vehicle, but it doesn’t seem that the fact that shots were fired and Michael Dunn pulled the trigger.

I find this story to be more tragic than anything; a human life is worth far more than a disagreement about loud music. Absolutely disgusting.
