George Zimmerman Suing NBC News Over Edited 911 Tape

George Zimmerman filed a legal complaint today against NBC News for editing the tape of the 911 call he made after shooting Trayvon Martin. The announcement was made on GZvsNBC — a site established by Zimmerman’s lawyers.

Zimmerman’s suit alleges that “NBC News saw the death of Trayvon Martin not as a tragedy but as an opportunity to increase ratings, and so set about to create the myth that George Zimmerman was a racist and predatory villain.” He is demanding a trial by jury and unspecified damages.

In February, NBC’s Today aired the controversial edit that was made to appear as if Zimmerman voluntarily told the operator that Martin was black. Zimmerman was actually responding to a question the operator had asked him—whether the “suspicious person” he was calling about was “black, white or Hispanic.” The network launched an investigation into the matter and admitted the misleading edit was “a very bad mistake.” An unnamed ‘seasoned’ producer was fired as a result.
