If there’s one thing the vast majority of Americans can agree on, it’s our mutual loathing for the Westboro Baptist Church. This vile group, which seeks to bring misery to every corner of God’s creation, is known for demonstrating against homosexuality at high-profile funerals, particularly those of soldiers, in order to compound the mourners’ despair. Despite what they think of themselves, they are nasty bullies.
And the prominent hacker group, Anonymous, doesn’t like bullies. [Writer’s note: Anonymous disdains being referred to as a ‘group’ – rather, they consider the movement an ‘idea’ – this writer apologizes for ever having referred to them as thus. Please don’t hack my credit card accounts.]
What started out as a minor skirmish earlier in the year between Anonymous and WBC grew into a battle since the Sandy Hook Elementary School shootings, and has now progressed into an all-out war.
In an awesomely ominous (and well produced) message put out by Anonymous to the WBC, they say the following:
“…We have unanimously deemed your organization to be harmful to the population of the United States of America, and have therefore decided to execute an agenda of action, which will progressively dismantle your institution of deceitful pretext and extreme bias, and cease when your zealotry runs dry. We recognize you as serious opponents, and do not expect our campaign to terminate in a short period of time. Attrition is our weapon, and we will waste no time, money, effort, and enjoyment in tearing your resolve into pieces, as with exposing the incongruity of your distorted faith. … We will not allow you to corrupt the minds of America with your seeds of hatred. We will not allow you to inspire aggression to the social affections which you deem inferior. We will render you obsolete. We will destroy you. We are coming. Everyone is equal. We are Anonymous. We are legion. We do not forgive. We do not forget. Expect us.”
Hacktivists began the attacks by re-posting the personal information of approximately 75 members of the ‘church,’ including phone numbers, addresses, and many social security numbers. We at Addicting Info will not be sharing that personal information because, 1.) We do not endorse the invasion of privacy; and 2.) It’s easy enough to find for yourself if you look.
Due to the extreme volume of calls resulting from the disclosures, WBC members Shirley Phelps-Roper, Margie Phelps, and others have been forced to disconnect their phone numbers.
In addition, Addicting Info was unable to access the WBC’s appallingly named Website as of this writing, presumably due to hacktivism; disruptions at the site have been occurring throughout the day.
Another hacktivist took to Twitter under the name of “Cosmo” (and having many of us questioning whether it’s the legendary teenaged “Cosmo the God” of the Underground Nazi hacktivist group (aka UGNazi) who plead guilty to multiple Internet felonies and is on probation until the age of 21; we hope it isn’t, because if he’s caught using the Internet for purposes other than educational, he’s risking a three-year jail stint). Cosmo was able to completely take over the Twitter account of WBC outspoken spokesperson Shirley Phelps-Roper, who’s named personally in the Anonymous video.
Anonymous isn’t stopping at the virtual environment in its efforts to thwart WBC. It currently has a host of people on the ground in Newtown to ensure that funerals and vigils of the shooting victims are not disrupted by any of WBC’s appalling activities. The network has been investigating rumors of WBC sightings, one of which occurred at the area’s Heritage Hotel, which quickly released the following statement on their Facebook page:
“The Heritage Hotel would like the community to know that there are no guests staying at our property from Westboro Baptist Church. We share the same concerns with the community as many of our associates have family members who have been directly affected by this tragedy. We have opened our hotel to the first responders, media and families impacted by this horrible event. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families and the community and we will do everything we can to help those in need.”
Not to be deterred, a WBC member Tweeted:
“#WBC2Picket Visitation of Dawn Hochsprung on Wed., 12/19, at Woodbury Funeral Home, Woodbury, CT”
While there hasn’t been any confirmed WBC sightings, there are counter-protesters at the ready. According to the counter-protest feed at Reddit:
“If you wish to blockade WBC, please join arms with your fellow anonymous. There were 100 strangers in Fairfield today, ready for the common cause. They had police approval.”
We here at Addicting Info implore our readers to take NO illegal action against the wretched beings of WBC. The reason they can afford to waste their lives traveling to picket sites is the number of successful lawsuits they instigate, and are always looking for more. So please don’t do anything that will give this group any additional funding to continue in their dastardly mission.
