Soledad O’Brien this morning interviewed John Lott, right-wing economist, Fox News commentator, and author of More Guns, Less Crime. During the interview, Soledad kept putting John Lott into the position of having to defend his stance, as you can see in the video:
John Lott makes a lot of very foolish statements in defense of his position. For one, comparing the ammunition used by the Bushmaster with the ammo used for hunting squirrels. Most small game hunters uses the .22, and yes, the Bushmaster uses the .223, so on the surface they sound similar. But they are not even close, as you can see here with the .22 on the left, the .223 used by the Bushmaster assault rifle on the right:
That he even made this argument means one of two things:
He is an idiot who has never handled a gun at any point in his life, knows nothing about them, and is generally not an expert witness to talk to in such a situation; or
He knows full well the difference and is intentionally trying to distort the situation because he knows if he admits the truth he will lose the argument.
So, he is either incompetent or a liar.
Now, his claim that of all the mass shootings since the 1950′s only one involved armed victims is similarly false. Doing even quick research finds multiple cases of armed victims, from the Appalachian School of Law shooting to the Fort Hood shooting. One really must ask if he is a habitual liar at this point; to even consider a U.S. miliary base as somewhere where no one had any form of weaponry on hand is absurd. And in all of this he neglects to consider that in a highly stressful situation, with multiple armed participants the chances of accidental death would increase. After all, even highly trained police officers have regular incidents when crossfire kills someone not even involved in an incident.
In the end, Grover Norquist’s co-author could only make his point by lying to the public, trying to pander off a refrain which we all have heard before. The pro-massacre crowd, as that is the only thing you can call them at this point, lives in a world where they believe John Wayne movies are real and the bad guys always wear black. In the real world, they are lost, unable to answer truthfully. Perhaps they do not know or understand the truth, in which case their world continues to collapse around them. It is time we called them what they are: liars.
