As originally reported on PIX11, friends of Adam Lanza’s mother Nancy give insight into the woman they knew and loved. (see video)
Nancy Lanza, who was the first victim of her son’s shooting rampage, is being portrayed as a gun-crazy survivalist monster of a mom who was passionate about teaching her son how to use guns, but her friends say that’s inaccurate. A stay-at-home mom and mother of two, Nancy was known to be a kind woman who enjoyed shooting guns as a recreational sport. The guns she legally owned and had in her home included a Glock, a Sig Sauer and a Bushmaster.
“She was a wonderful, beautiful, elegant woman who loved life,” close friend Russ Hanoman, said, “and most importantly she loved her son, Adam.”
Hanoman met Nancy Lanza six years ago at a popular bar and restaurant in Newtown. He said that to his knowledge, Nancy Lanza did not have a connection to Sandy Hook Elementary School. She retired from the financial world and received a large settlement during her 2009 divorce from Peter Lanza.
Nancy Lanza worried about her younger son, Adam. According to Hanoman:
“He was clearly troubled. He did have issues. He was not violent in any way,” Hanoman said. “He was a vegan because he didn’t want to hurt animals.”
Adam Lanza’s vegan lifestyle didn’t stem from health concerns. He was what is known as an “ethical vegan” because he didn’t like hurting animals.
Another close friend of Nancy Lanza, Ellen Adriana, said that:
“She had guns. She used to go with other friends of ours and go shooting.”
The question remains as to why an emotionally disturbed child would be raised in a house full of powerful weaponry. Her close friends hope that the outcome of the tragedy of Sandy Hook Elementary School will bring more attention to mental health issues.
