WND (WorldNetDaily) has pushed beyond previous limits of tasteless right-wing hysteria, going so far as to publish a column that accuses President Obama of imitating Adolf Hitler in staging the massacre of his own people for political purposes.
Why are we reporting on this obvious dementia?? Because everyone should know that the column’s author, Bradlee Dean, is allowed to perform before children at K-12 schools with his traveling evangelical performance, eerily titled “You Can Run But You Can’t Hide.”
This unhinged individual, who has built a conspiracy theory around the Newtown tragedy, presents dozens of testimonials on his website supposedly written by school administrators in mostly conservative states such as North Dakota, South Dakota, Oklahoma and Minnesota.
The Dec. 20 WND column cites “conflicting news reports” and the “coincidental government agenda pushed shortly thereafter, namely gun control” as indications that Obama staged the tragedy to further his gun control agenda.
A window into the insanity:
Barack Obama, the ‘Architect of this new America,’ put himself in front of the cameras to address the massacre and read a scripted plea, attempting to cry over ‘our children.’ He then promised ‘meaningful action’… This was in an obvious attempt to pass gun-control legislation, only to blame the American people…
When the ‘fire’ is started, these government gun banners are right there to strip away your rights in an attempt to gain control under the guise of ‘putting out the fire.’ Adolf Hitler was responsible for attacking his own Reichstag to start a world war.
Bradlee Dean links both the Aurora, CO. “Batman” shooting and the Sandy Hook massacre to developments in the debate on the U.N. Small Arms Treaty, incorrectly stating that the treaty “bans the trade, sale and ownership of all semi-automatic weapons.”
In fact, Snopes.com has debunked that claim, writing that:
The Arms Trade Treaty has nothing to do with restricting the legal sale or ownership of guns within the United States. The aim of the U.N. Arms Trade Treaty is to combat the illicit international trade of arms by ‘tightening regulation of, and setting international standards for, the import, export and transfer of conventional weapons’…The text of the proposed treaty specifically ‘reaffirms the sovereign right and responsibility of any State to regulate and control transfers of conventional arms that take place exclusively within its territory’…
One of the sites Bradlee Dean’s column links to is Alex Jones’ InfoWars.com, the site that spread the rumor about FEMA concentration camps after Katrina. A related post on InfoWars suggests that the Sandy Hook school shooting was staged because a scene in the Dark Knight Rises movie shows Commissioner Gordon pointing to the name “Sandy Hook” on a map.
That part is true – and weird:
However, rather than being proof of a government conspiracy, the coincidence might suggest that Adam Lanza could have seen the movie and associated it with James Eagan Holmes’ July rampage in the movie theatre showing that film. (The InfoWars column suggests “Sandy Hook” was inserted into the movie via Satanist or “occult magic” forces that are supposedly responsible for the shootings.)
Of course, WND is a dangerous and irresponsible tabloid – but it’s a blog that seems to be well-established within the right wing of the Republican party. Rick Santorum, who ran for the Republican presidential nomination and was considered a serious contender for a while, writes for the site.
