Citing an epic lack of leadership on the part of House Speak John Boehner, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid now appears to believe the country is headed over the fiscal cliff, as reported by Yahoo! News.
Reid blasted Boehner’s failure to push any sort of compromise through the House, describing the weeper-in-chief’s leadership there to a dictatorship that shuts out all but the most ultra-conservative Republican members. He also took the Republican to task over letting lawmakers out for vacation with the deadline looming so near and seems certain that the nation will go over the cliff at this point. Said Reid:
“The Speaker just has a few days left to change his mind. But I have to be very honest … I don’t know, time-wise, how it can happen now. Nothing can move forward in regards to our budget crisis unless Speaker Boehner and Leader McConnell are willing to participate in coming up with a bipartisan plan. Speaker Boehner is unwilling to negotiate, we’ve not heard a word from Leader McConnell, nothing is happening. Democrats can’t put together a plan on their own.”
Reid is optimistic the Senate-passed bill extending income tax cuts on everyone making under $250,000 a year could pass the house, albeit with most votes coming from House Democrats and only slight Republican support. Republicans are still standing firm against raising taxes on anyone, ever, despite the utter failing of any alternatives so far.
If Congress fails to act and the nation is driven over the fiscal cliff, it will be the second time in as many years Congressional Republicans will have done serious damage to the country in the name of their political extremism and abject unwillingness to compromise on anything. The Debt Ceiling negotiation marked the first time in history American credit was downgraded and, cliff or no cliff, Republicans will have another opportunity to hold us all hostage in Debt Ceiling 2: Are We There Yet? in 2013.
