A few days ago, Los Angeles had a one day, no questions asked, gun buy back event in which anyone could drop off firearms and be paid for it in Ralph’s gift cards. The going price was $100 for handguns, $200 for assault weapons and an unspecified amount for…rocket launchers?!
Yeah, that’s an actual military anti-tank weapon. Still think our current unenforced gun control laws are keeping you safe? Still think the ATF shouldn’t even exist? Still convinced there’s no problem? I wonder how many people think it’s their constitutional right to own rocket launchers? For deer hunting of course.
The LA Times reports:
Villaraigosa said the LAPD collected 901 handguns, 698 rifles, 363 shotguns and 75 assault weapons. The weapons will be melted down.
He said nearly three-quarters of those turning in the weapons said in an informal survey that they felt safer with the weapons off the street.
“Perhaps the most honest testament to the success of yesterday’s program can be seen in the 166 weapons that were surrendered for nothing,” Villaraigosa said.
Police Chief Charlie Beck said it was the most successful gun buyback event since the city began the program.
No doubt, NRA Creep in Chief, Wayne LaPierre feels that the streets and schools of LA are less safe now that there are less guns but here in the 21st Century, we’re done with the Wild Wild West. Until we can reverse the gun lust that LaPierre and his NRA gun proliferation lobby has engendered in our society, we can only wonder how many more rocket launchers (for hunting!) are out there and how many more mass murders it will take before LaPierre crawls back into the slime pit he came from.
Update: The LA Times reports that the two rocket launchers were “stripped-down shells without the technical parts needed to discharge a projectile.” While the original picture (shown above) has a yellow stripe that, according to military personnel, denotes a “dummy,” a second picture (below) clearly shows the word “TRAINER.” We apologize for the error but maintain that if two rocket launchers stripped of parts could make its way into civilian hands, so could two live ones. Further, despite the claims of some that the “left” is sensationalizing this, the fact remains that the owners turned them in for no money because they were no longer comfortable having even inoperable launchers. Let’s not let turn an honest mistake be used by opportunistic supporters of gun proliferation to distract from the very real danger unregulated guns present to our country.
