Should John Kerry be approved for the post of Secretary of State, the newly retired liberal Massachusetts Congressman, Barney Frank (D) has thrown his hat in the ring, at least temporarily. From Huffington Post:

“A few weeks ago, I said I wasn’t interested. It was kind of like, you’re about to graduate and they said, you’ve got to go to summer school. But that [fiscal cliff] deal now means that February, March, and April are going to be among the most important months in American financial history,” he said on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe.”

“Yes, in fact, I’m not going to be coy, it’s not anything I’ve ever been good at. I’ve told the governor that I would now like, frankly, to be a part of that. It’s only a three-month period, I wouldn’t want to do anything more, but to be honest, it’s a little arrogant.”

Said Frank, “Coach, put me in.”

Frank, who served 32 years in the House of Representatives and 45 years of public life, retired with the idea of settling down. His goal was to write, lecture, teach and enjoy life as a newlywed.

Throughout his time in Congress, Frank has been an outspoken but pragmatic advocate of progressive ideals. He is pro-civil rights for all. He is anti-war and pro-legalization of marijuana. He has a scathing wit; with the ability to demolish an opponent in a single tongue lashing. Here’s one of my favorite videos, where a woman compares Obama and Obamacare to Hitler. “Trying to have a conversation with you is like trying to argue with a dining room table,” retorted Frank.

  • Former Representative Frank, it’s a 6 year term, not 3 months.

    • Correct Moongrim, but if I remember correctly, in the context of what he is saying, the 3-month term (or possibly longer, he may just be referring to the fiscal cliff period) is only going to be a partial caretaker term. Under current Mass. law, the governor appoints a caretaker for the Senate seat until a special election is held to determine who will carry out the rest of the full term.

This is similar to when Ted Kennedy died, as the Mass governor appointed Paul Kirk to fill his seat from Sept, 2009 to Feb, 2010 until Scott Brown was elected (via special election) to the seat.

I think all Mr. Frank is getting at is he is willing to put his retirement on hold for a few months during such an important and tumultuous time, in order to do one last (brief) service to the commonwealth of MA.
