We all know about the tragic deaths of the students and teachers in Newtown, CT. It was called by some news outlets one of the deadliest massacres in recent history. We also know the sickest element of the story: the fact that most of those killed were children, small, elementary school-aged children. The shooting did something else as well, though. It finally opened a real discussion on gun control.
It is a damn shame that it took such a horrific tragedy to start this conversation, but starting it is, as gun control groups everywhere are putting pressure on politicians to fight for tougher gun laws. Now, Mayors Against Illegal Guns, a gun control initiative that was co-founded New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, is going to tug on the heartstrings of Americans by running an advertisement featuring Roxanna Green, the mother of a nine-year-old girl who died in the 2011 Tucson, AZ shooting
The NRA will have a fit about this. They will accuse this woman of attacking them, gun owners, and the Second Amendment. They will be infuriated, as they always are, when anyone suggests that we need tougher gun laws, fewer guns, or smaller clips of ammunition.
You know what, though? In the wake of all of these tragedies — Columbine, Virginia Tech, Aurora, Newtown, so on and so forth — I really cannot bring myself to give a damn about what the NRA does and doesn’t want. They are powerful, sure, but isn’t it time to take that power away, to stop running scared from them and stand up to this heinous lobby of gun nuts? I have the same questions for our leaders that the mother in this video has:
When will you stand up to the gun lobby? Whose child has to die next?
