The Republican National Committee Chair, Reince Priebus, is encouraging Republicans who control the legislature in Democratic-leaning states — like Ohio, Pennsylvania and Michigan — states to overhaul their electoral system in ways that would be advantageous to the GOP. They’re proposing one of two types of systems. The first type of ‘reform’ would distribute electoral votes proportionally — so if the Democratic candidate wins 53% of the votes, 53% of the electoral votes go to the candidate — this would be a big help to the Republicans. The second of these options would allocate votes by congressional district — which would give even more help to Republicans by giving more weight to the districts they gerrymandered back in 2010.
