During a hearing on whether evolution should be taught in Louisiana schools, Senator Mike Walsworth (R-LA) asked whether e. coli bacteria can evolve into people. When a panelist explained how e. coli experiments can be “frozen in time” as they “continue to evolve,” Walsworth interrupted to demand, “They evolve into a person?” The woman deserves a prize for not immediately planting her face into the palm of her hand. No wonder the high school and college graduation rates are so low in Walsworth’s state.
