Former Vice-President (In Name Only) and Overlord of the League of Calamitous Intent, Dick Cheney, recently awoke from his thousand years rest to give advice on gun control. Allow me to repeat that for those of you whose capillaries didn’t just rupture: the man who shot an old guy in the face was asked his opinions on gun control. And the man with all the physiognomies of Lex Luthor, the Penguin, and Newman from Seinfeld–without the cuddly disposition–was critical of President Obama’s gun safety measures.
It seems Fox News correspondent, Griff Jenkins, met up with Cheney over the week at the Safari Club International convention for gun owners and manufacturers, where he was able to solicit Cheney’s opinion on the hot-topic of guns. The Almighty King of Fear, who has aggressively criticized the President in the past on issues mostly related to foreign policy, was very concerned with Obama’s gun safety efforts.
“We may end up in a situation where you get a proposal or a proposition that does in fact threaten the rights of law-abiding Americans, and at the same time, doesn’t do anything with respect to the problem everybody’s concerned about, such as the shooting that happened in Connecticut,” the Wyoming Republican said.
“I find especially in groups like the group here and an awful lot of my folks in Wyoming who supported me all those years in Congress are very, very concerned that there isn’t adequate regard for the rights of law-abiding citizens,” he added. “We understand that there’s clearly an effort underway, but one of the things we’ve done in Wyoming — with respect to Jackson Hole, where I live, with respect to safety of schools — we have a deputy sheriff, armed deputy sheriff at the schools in the city. And that’s probably a more effective deterrent than anything that Congress seems to be debating at the present time.” (Raw Story)
I don’t know, requiring the enforcement of basic background checks and closing the gun show loophole–a couple of the rather mundane measures included in Obama’s gun safety proposals–sounds like the President has no intention of interfering with a law-abiding citizen’s right to shoot old guys in the face. But one can’t help but suddenly be overcome with irony when hearing Dick Cheney discussing the inalienable rights of law-abiding citizens. After all, this is the very same man who saw fit to institute to some of the most invasive and civil liberty encroaching measures.
