At about 10:30 am Arizona time, a white male in his 60s walked into an office complex on 16th Street and Glendale in Phoenix, AZ, and started shooting. While details are still emerging, as best as can be determined at this writing, three people were shot, one critically. It is possible those numbers will change.
According to Sgt. Tommy Thompson of the Phoenix police department, it is not believed the shooting was random, although the motive is, as yet, unknown.
From Fox Phoenix:
He said police were given conflicting information about the suspect leaving the scene. The building was evacuated and police are looking for a suspect or any additional victims.
Navika Sood, assistant director of nursing at First at Home Health Services, said she heard a handful of loud popping noises Wednesday morning. She said she and her co-workers locked the entrances to their office and gathered in one area away from the windows.
“Everyone was just scared, honestly, just scared,” she said.
Others reported hearing gunshots and locking themselves in their offices away from window. One witness looked out and reported seeing victims lying on the ground outside the building. The streets have been closed as police investigate.
There is some sad irony to note in that Gabby Giffords, shot down in another notorious Arizona shooting, was testifying with her husband, Mark Kelly, in front of a congressional hearing on gun violence as this event was unfolding. Her comments at the hearing resonate even more sharply in light of this event:
“The time is now. You must act. Be bold, be courageous, Americans are counting on you.”
NRA CEO, Wayne LaPierre, is also testifying….
