McCain Tells Aurora Shooting Victim’s Mother She ‘Needs Some Straight Talk’ About Guns
In case you’ve ever wondered or suspected it, I can now confirm the truth: Senator John McCain (R-AZ) is an insensitive ass. At a town hall meeting Wednesday, February 20, the mother of one of the victims of the Aurora theater shooting confronted the former presidential candidate on his pro-gun stances. She said, “My 24-year-old son Alex was murdered in a movie theater in Colorado,” Caren Teves said. “These assault rifles allow the shooter to fire many rounds without having to re-load. These weapons do not belong on our streets.”
Here’s his response, courtesy of azfamily.com:
“I can tell you right now you need some straight talk. That assault weapons ban will not pass the Congress of the United States,” said Sen. McCain.
McCain said his plan to deal with mass shootings would protect Second Amendment rights.
“We are working together to try to come up with a package that would prevent guns from falling into the hands of criminals while at the same time preserving our Second Amendment rights,” he said.
Well, the House will probably stop an assault weapons ban, this is true. It would likely pass the Senate (which McCain is an unfortunate part of). However, saying she needs some “straight talk” implies that her opinions are simply irrelevant in the face of his; this is extremely disrespectful to someone with a son that was killed in a tragic mass shooting. Hopefully his plan is for better registration programs, background checks and possibly smart guns of some sort to ensure that near-military weapons don’t fall into the wrong hands, but I somehow doubt it.
During the town hall the subjects of Obama impeachment, Benghazi and the subject of immigration; McCain’s stated plan for border patrol (the Senator from Arizona, so he has some pull here) included a fence as well as drones.
