Poor Annie. She just can’t seem to be able to control her mouth. I can sympathize. I often say something inappropriate and pay for it later. But not in this kind of situation. Then again, I’m not like Ann Coulter – someone who lives to insult and belittle others.
This time her mouth got her in trouble in a debate with John Stossel at his annual International Students for Liberty Conference in Washington, D.C. Stossel invites prominent libertarian guests and, just to shake things up, a token liberal and conservative. This year, the conservative was Ann Coulter. I’m betting Stossel is regretting that decision now.
In a room of about 1,400 students, televised on Fox Business Network, Coulter and Stossel engaged in some debate. She was met with a few boos when she suggested that it was true that Saddam Hussein was looking for uranium from Niger. Most people with half a brain now understand that was a lie promulgated by the Bush administration in support for their illegal war in Iraq. Apparently those students are a lot smarter than Annie.
When the topic veered to the legalization of drugs, Coultergeist just couldn’t help herself, muttering, “This is why people think libertarians are pussies.” Though it was bleeped on the broadcast, Andrew Kirell of Mediaite was there and wrote about the exchange. He quotes her explanation:
“We’re living in a country that is 70-percent socialist, the government takes 60 percent of your money. They are taking care of your health care, of your pensions. They’re telling you who you can hire, what the regulations will be. And you want to suck up to your little liberal friends and say, ‘Oh, but we want to legalize pot.’ You know, if you’re a little more manly you would tell them what your position on employment discrimination is. How about that? But it’s always ‘We want to legalize pot.” (Source)
Well, we can see that Ann has no math ability, eh? When Stossel asked later why gays can’t get married, Coulter replied:
“Well, they can. They have to marry a member of the opposite sex.”
She was booed again and defended herself by attacking the students, telling them that this was another issue on which they are “… just sucking up to liberals…”
She was booed one more time when she stated that liberals want to destroy the family, a common refrain in Coulterland. I am gratified to see that these libertarians (unlike a few I’ve seen) are adamant about believing that the individual should be left alone by the government. I don’t agree with them on everything but I do on this point.
To quote Mr. Kirell:
“If you truly care about personal responsibility, limited government, and freedom of choice, then you should oppose government involvement in your personal life as much as in your economic life.” (Source)
Well said. And obviously a much more complex idea than Ann Coulter can handle. Perhaps she should empty out some of that conservative claptrap from her brain and try to learn to reason before the cognitive dissonance sets up a vibration in her head and, finally, blows it up. Until then, she really ought to look into a vow of silence.
