Doesn’t it figure that the biggest trash talker is also the biggest baby? That was certainly the case when New York Post reporters confronted Timothy Dluhos about racist Tweets he posted. He’d been doing it for some time before the reporters found him to ask him about the remarks.
Dluhos works for the New York City Fire Department, a place one retired veteran says is full of men like that. According to the vet it’s hardly an isolated case. The FDNY is so non-diverse that federal courts have had to order them to hire more minorities. It follows that such a large group of white men would harbor some bad apples.
Dluhos, or “Bad Lieutenant,” his online handle, works at EMS station 57 in Brooklyn’s Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood but he was confronted outside his Staten Island home. When reporters asked him about the ugly Tweets, Dluhos broke into sobs, crying:
“My life is ruined. Oh, my God. I’m so sorry.” (source)
But in the next breath, he insisted that there had to be worse people than him. Well, yes, of course there are. And they get confronted, too. But when people work with the public and are charged with their safety, they are held to a higher standard. Referring to the Mayor of New York as “King Jew” and “King Heeb” is a failure to live up to that high standard.
Not just references to the Mayor appear on his Twitter feed. Some of the things he Tweeted are truly vile:
Feb. 12: “I’m going to give up racial insults for Lent. Jesus that didn’t [last] too long. F–ken chinks can’t drive.”
Feb. 2 (when Bloomberg was bitten by a groundhog at the zoo): “Too bad he didn’t have rabies or AIDS and too bad he didn’t bite King Heeb’s face off.”
Jan. 30: “A gold Nazi-era pin with a German U-boat and a swastika is ‘my most prized artifact.'”
March 14 (on the shooting of Kimani Gray): “He was a good boy who never done NUFFIN wrong. Unf–kenreal. He was a perp & died like a perp. Oh well.” (source)
That’s just the tip of the iceberg. He was fond of posting photos of naked, obese women. He admitted to being a “dirty pervert” and that he immediately looks at the crotches of women in tight pants, looking for “camel toe.”His profile picture was of Adolph Hitler. He took many pictures of himself with an arsenal of weapons and bragged that he had enough firepower to “arm Haiti.” Yet he insisted that he doesn’t hate minorities or Jews. No, he just uses words like “heeb,” “ni**er” and “chink” for the heck of it. Nobody who doesn’t harbor at least some racism uses those word to refer to other people.
Within hours of the confrontation, Dluhos’ social media pages had been scrubbed. They are now entirely gone. His union, who says they do not condone his behavior, warns its members to stay off social networks, including Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Flickr and other blogs. Apparently, Dluhos either didn’t pay attention or figured he was immune. He certainly knows now that nobody is safe on the Internet. In one last attempt to absolve himself of his guilt, he made it worse:
“I’ve seen strangers shot and killed. I’ve seen families torn apart by violence. It’s a damn shame that gang members ruin it for hardworking, struggling people.” (source)
Yep, it’s those gangs. Those minority gangs ruin it for the rest of us. It’s so easy to blame things on them, to use “the other” as a scapegoat. Mr. Dluhos needs to learn to take responsibility for his own actions. The FDNY tells us that Dluhos’ behavior is “under review.” Since this is not the first such case in the past week, they better look at it really hard. As for Mr. Dluhos, he’s not blubbering because he feels bad about what he wrote, he feels bad that he got called on it.
