In the hours after yesterday’s Boston Marathon attack, the right wing was quick to blame Muslim extremists despite the lack of a single indication of the identity of those involved. Similarly there were those on the left, like me, who were just as quick to point out that a bombing on Tax Day/Patriot’s Day at a marathon dedicated to the families of the Newtown Massacre smacked of a right wing Timothy McVeigh style “protest” (aka right wing terrorism). Time will tell which of us is correct but rather than wait for the facts to surface, the Tea Party Nation founder Judson Phillips has decided that President Obama is clearly to blame in an email sent out on Tuesday.
Via Right Wing Watch:
Unfortunately the sad truth is we will be hit again. It will happen sooner or later. It will probably be sooner than later.
There are two reasons why we will be hit again. First, we have a determined enemy who hates us. Second, we have a government that is not committed to protecting America.
It is a pretty safe bet right now that this attack was carried out by an Islamist. It was a well-coordinated attack. In its publication, Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula called for just this kind of attack.
While the government and media have fallen all over themselves to downplay this fact, there is a twenty-year-old Saudi student being detained as a “person of interest.” Person of interest in a nice police term that is used for someone who is not under arrest and therefore does not have to be read his Miranda rights and who hopefully will not lawyer up.
Barack Obama could not force himself to use the word “terrorism” in his speech last night and the FBI right now won’t call this a terrorist incident.
The reason we will be hit again is because our government is not committed to destroying our enemy. Radical Islam is our enemy.
Some in the far end of the Liberty Movement will start screaming about war mongering “Neo-cons.” Nothing could be further from the truth.
We need to first recognize our enemy and then come up with a strategy to destroy them. This is an ideological war. While sometimes that will mean guns and bombs, neither will destroy an ideology.
The values of the west, most of them good, some of them not so good are what will destroy radical Islam. In the west, we fall all over ourselves not to insult Islam.
We can go down the list of things Islam has done to the west. During the height of the Cold War, the Soviets came up with something called the Brezhnev doctrine. It said, “What’s ours is ours. What is yours is negotiable.” Radical Islam and perhaps even non-radical Islam holds to the same belief.
They believe that once a nation becomes Islamic it cannot have Islam removed from it. However, non-Islamic nations may be conquered or otherwise taken over.
Reagan knew that America had to stand up to the Communist threat. Bill Clinton wanted to ignore the Islamist threat. George W. Bush just wanted to hold the hand of the Saudi king and Barack Obama just wants to bow to him. As we mourn the victims of Boston, we need to make a solemn vow that we will not allow this to happen again.
The only way we make sure this never happens again is to identify our enemy and then craft a strategy to totally defeat that enemy.
The right, in general, has been awfully quick to jump on the Islam bashing bandwagon. Fox News and the Post has been salivating over a Saudi Arabian man that was under guard at a local hospital following the attack. Turns out that he is not a suspect, just a witness. Why the guard? Because people like Judson Phillips are whipping up fear and anger at Muslims.
The most disturbing aspect of the bombing is the barely restrained glee with which the right has responded. A sore topic among conservatives is that there has been no successful terrorist attacks on American soil since Obama took office and he’s proven to be far more capable in killing terrorists and reaching foreign policy goals than the previous administration. For a political movement that obsesses over their national security bona fides and ties it disturbingly closely to their manhood, a successful terrorist act is like a soothing balm. Listening to right wing rhetoric, you’d think that nothing bad ever happened under Bush. Except for 9/11, the anthrax attacks, the bombing of the USS Cole and the several embassies and consulates that were assaulted. But FINALLY, they can blame Obama for something that actually happened!
Here’s a prime example of the anti-Obama hysteria currently gripping conservatives:
And here’s Patrick Dollard. Apparently he’s someone important in the right wing bubble of gibberish:
The revisionist history is breathtaking. I’ll bet cold hard cash that if Dollard was forced to admit that there were several terrorist attacks under Bush, his head just might explode.
All of this loud frothing serves two deeply cynical purposes: First, to get as many people on the right as riled up as possible at Obama and liberals. Without any significant Muslim threats, the cash cow that is professional Islamophobia has been a bit anemic of late. Even if it (most likely) turns out not to be a Muslim, well, darn it! It COULD have been a Muslim so you good “Christian” Americans should be afraid! Be VERY afraid. Also, you should oppose everything Obama does because he’s in league with the Muslim terrorists that may or may not have bombed Boston. And send money to the Tea Party so they can keep
making you wet your diapers fighting terrorism.
The second purpose of all this anti-Muslim screeching is even more disgusting: That this attack occurred on Tax Day as well as Patriot’s Day (the third Monday in April) at an event in which several of the Newtown families were running is a giant red arrow pointing, not at Muslims, but at right wing extremists steeped in Tea Party rhetoric of revolution, Second Amendment solutions and “watering the tree of liberty with the blood of patriots and tyrants.” They know this. They also know that if this turns out to be the case, the nation’s eyes will look to them just like they did after the Oklahoma City Bombing. Back then, the silent guilt they carried was enough for them to tone down the proto-Tea Party insanity that is fully realized today. As a preemptive move, they are loudly blaming Obama and Muslims because if (when) the other shoe drops and the country finds out that, yes, Fox News and Glenn Beck and Rush Limbaugh and the entire conservative entertainment complex that oozes violence and eliminationist rhetoric had a hand in egging on the bomber(s), they will already have millions of conservatives ready to defend them and even refute that it wasn’t a Muslim. Keep in mind, this is the political movement that still has a large percentage of people that believe Obama is a secret Muslim, Iraq was behind 9/11 and that we found the WMDs. A year from now, they will still be absolutely convinced that Muslims attacked Boston and Obama “let it happen.”
The right wing media knows its audience and they know how tight a grip they have on how that audience (mis) perceives reality. Expect to see a lot more of the kind of self-serving trash that the Tea Party Nation is selling to its easily manipulated audience in the next couple of days and weeks. They have to get in there and shape public opinion before reality rears its ugly head.
