Pat Robertson, like most conservatives, is obsessed with repealing the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare), and fantasizes about Americans staging a coup to overthrow President Obama. House Republicans have already voted to repeal Obamacare 37 times rather than do anything constructive to help the nation. And it seems every conservative has used the words ‘revolution,’ ‘coup,’ ‘overthrow,’ ‘revolt,’ ‘war,’ and ‘violence’ to express their desire to see President Obama toppled one way or another.
On Wednesday, Pat Robertson ventured into the same territory on the 700 Club, saying that Americans need to act like Egyptians and overthrow President Obama and stop Obamacare, his landmark legislative achievement that provides health insurance to millions of Americans, makes prescriptions cheaper for seniors, stop insurance companies from denying people health insurance, and lowers the cost of health care.
“You know, they revolted in Egypt against the oppressive actions of the Muslim Brotherhood and this example of state socialism is something that Americans should rise up against,” Robertson said. “They snuck that thing by us. It was strictly a partisan initiative.”
Here’s the video:
First, the notion that the Affordable Care Act is strictly a Democratic effort is simply false. Republicans had the same idea in the 1990s. The individual mandate was an idea proposed by the Heritage Foundation and introduced by the GOP as an alternative to President Bill Clinton’s health care plan. But because President Obama, an African-American, proposed the idea for his own plan, Republicans felt they had to oppose it. Not one Republican has voted to pass Obamacare, but to call it a strictly partisan plan is complete and utter nonsense.
Finally, the people of Egypt successfully toppled President Mohammed Morsi last week and over 50 people have died in the process. Surely, Robertson isn’t suggesting that Americans should take an action that could result in violence? Because the way conservatives have been obsessed with guns lately, it wouldn’t take long for one of them to fire one. The American people can lead mass protests, but it’s unlikely President Obama would resign considering conservatives across the country have been protesting against his administration from the start and he hasn’t stepped down. So unless Robertson is suggesting a bloody coup, which I’m sure the Secret Service will have something to say about, he should stop spouting this kind of rhetoric. The fact is, the only legal way to “overthrow” a President is to vote for and elect a new one in 2016. It’s highly doubtful Americans will vote for a Republican though. It’s also far more likely that Americans will vote against conservative lawmakers at the state and national level to punish them for sabotaging the country and viciously targeting the rights of women and minorities. All Americans have to do is wait until 2014 to do that. No revolution necessary.
