‘Pink Mass’ Is Believed To Make The Deceased Gay: Fred Phelps’ Mom Is The Subject

Satanic Temple Pink Mass

Can the Satanic Temple’s ‘Pink Mass’ ritual turn the Westboro Baptist Church founder’s dead mother gay … and raise funds for their ‘Adopt a Highway’ sign? Photo from the International Business Times.

Most of you have heard of the Mormon Church’s practice of baptizing the dead into their faith, I’m sure. Well, one Satanic Temple has a similar kind of ritual which might cause as big of an uproar. But instead of making the recipient a member of their church, this rite makes them gay. The Pink Mass is performed at a grave-site and it is believed by those who enact it that it changes the sexual orientation of the deceased in the afterlife.

Last weekend, officials from the New York-based Satanic Temple went to the gravesite of Westboro Baptist Church founder Fred Phelps’s mother, Catherine Idalette Johnston, in Mississippi to perform the ceremony, with Temple Priest and spokesman Lucien Greaves officiating. Two same-sex couples helped him by kissing over the top of the headstone. The ritual was performed as an affirmation of freedom and happiness for everyone, which is a tenet of the Satanic Temple. Greaves said that the trip and ceremony came about as a reaction to the Westboro Baptist Church’s threat to picket the funerals of Boston Marathon bombing victims:

“The idea for the Pink Mass ceremony and website came during the aftermath of the tragic Boston Marathon bombings, during which time the WBC were threatening to protest the funerals of the bombing victims. Members of The Satanic Temple were in Boston, waiting for them, but they failed to show. Later, the WBC issued a statement that they had been present ‘in spirit’. We decided that a same-sex couple celebrating ceremony at the grave-site of Fred Phelps’s mother was an appropriate way to meet the Westboro Baptists, ‘in spirit’, but this time on our terms.”

The Pink Mass, Greaves explained, must now make Phelps believe that his mother is gay in the afterlife. And every time a gay couple kisses at the grave-site, Mrs. Phelps, the now-gay deceased, will be pleasured wherever she may be. Which is rather a pleasant thought, really. Much nicer than damning people to burn for eternity.

The Satanic Temple also has another motive for performing the ritual: they hope that the attention drawn to their organization will help them raise funds so that they can participate in the NYC Department of Transportation’s Adopt-a-Highway program. I bet the WBC would never do such a thing. If you want to learn more about their campaign, you can look here. Most people think that the Satanic temples and churches are evil and practice horrible, bloody rituals to honor Satan. Thanks to Hollywood, that is the common misconception. Most Satanic churches are harmless, though some can be rooted in selfishness. But that can also be said of Republicans, so… This particular Temple is no more terrible than your average neighborhood church.

When I first read about this I asked myself if this was maybe a bit too far to go to poke at the WBC. But then I remembered those vile Tweets to Glee cast members and their threat to picket Cory Montheith’s funeral. And I thought, “No,this is not too far. Not when you consider what they do to people who do not deserve their vitriol.” I can’t wait to see Phelps’ reaction.
