Last week, conservative radio host and anti-gay bigot Bryan Fischer sided with Russia and Vladimir Putin in support of that country’s policy of persecuting homosexuals.
“Russia is not being homophobic, it’s homo-realistic,” Fischer claimed in an interview with Voice of Russia.
“The Russian government is trying to take the issue into consideration and establish public policy to contribute to public health, as this lifestyle is not being promoted, endorsed or granted special legal protection. Homosexual behavior is just as risky as drug abuse. I think the Russian government is right to be concerned with propaganda on teenagers who are at the age of struggling through sexual identity issue and we should help to channel these urges in productive behavior. Heterosexuality is God’s design. Policies that encourage young people to think this are good ideas. Homosexual behavior damages the body and soul. We love homosexuals enough to tell them the truth.”
Simply put, Fischer likes the way Russia is persecuting people and he wants America to follow suit. This comes from the same man who slammed Mitt Romney last year by saying the former Republican presidential nominee would be weak in dealing with America’s supposed Cold War enemy. But now that Russia has adopted conservative hatred of gays, the right-wing has decided Russia isn’t so bad after all.
Take Pat Buchanan for instance. He’s been anti-Russia for years, and has made every effort to compare President Obama’s policies to something that Russia would support. Now, he too is jumping aboard the pro-Russia train.
Right Wing Watch reports that in a column for World Net Daily, Buchanan asks readers to choose sides. They can either choose to support American newspapers that report on the struggle for gay rights or Russian persecution policies. Guess which side Buchanan chose?
“If we seek to build a Good Society by traditional Catholic and Christian standards, why should not homosexual propaganda be treated the same as racist or anti-Semitic propaganda?” Buchanan asked.
“Putin is trying to re-establish the Orthodox Church as the moral compass of the nation it had been for 1,000 years before Russia fell captive to the atheistic and pagan ideology of Marxism.
“‘The adoption of Christianity,’ declared Putin, ‘became a turning point in the fate of our fatherland, made it an inseparable part of the Christian civilization and helped turn it into one of the largest world powers.'”
In other words, Buchanan wants America to do to gay people what Russia is doing. He wants America to be governed by religion and persecute homosexuals.
Conservatives have jumped completely off the deep end. They are so desperate to enact anti-gay laws here in America that they now support a country that they have referred to as our enemy for decades. They want to enact a policy of persecution that totally goes against everything the Constitution stands for. Comparing the push for equal rights for gays to racism or anti-semitism is insane. While racism and anti-semitism are hateful in nature, LGBT equality is not. It’s about being able to love the consenting adult you’re in love with. It’s also about being able to marry that person. It’s about having the privacy and freedom to live your life the way you please. Conservatives once believed in privacy and freedom. Now they only believe in those principles for white Christian males, which again, violates American constitutional ideals. The Constitution doesn’t just protect straight white guys. It protects all Americans.
To be blunt, conservatives have turned their backs on America. They no longer love this country. Instead, they love Russia. Who knew that all Russia had to do to capture the hearts of conservatives was to persecute gay people? Conservatives can no longer claim that President Obama and Democrats want to turn America into an oppressive nation like Russia. From now on, that title belongs to conservatives. They can’t say they support freedom and then cheer for tyranny. They can only pick one or the other, and it looks like they have chosen.
