A case like this might make one think there may be something to reincarnation. Geoffrey Portway pleaded guilty in May to possession and distribution of child pornography and solicitation to commit a violent crime – his sentencing occurs on Sept. 17 and he could get up to 27 years in prison. But it’s what Portway apparently planned to do that brings to mind Albert Fish, a child murderer who ate his victims. Fish practiced his ghoulish activities between 1924 and 1934 in New York state, killing 3 children and boasting of eating parts of them. It’s not too far out to think that Geoffrey Portway could have become a modern-day Albert Fish if he hadn’t been caught.

Portway was tracked through chat rooms, where he and others traded images and chatted about doing terrible things to children. Portway, who went by the moniker “Fat Longpig,” shared grisly details describing what he wanted to do:

“Really want to eat a nice young boy. Setting [up] my basement… setup is [a] locked basement, has a cage, has a table to tie people to, working on sound proofing now… [the victim] will know he will be my dinner… [the cage] has a whole [sic] in it for head to come out for feedings. :) … [the victim will be] sticking his little head, gag in place, through the hole :) if he is young enough, he will be sitting on my lap when i feed him. but if older, the hole will work.”

With his sentencing looming, authorities have released photos of Portway’s dungeon-like basement equipped exactly as he described in his chats. Narrow stairs lead to a sound proof room that contained a metal cage with a “whole” just as Portway said it did. There was also a rusty steel table with loops for restraints, bondage and butchering equipment and a child-sized coffin painted blue inside. Upstairs, computer searches turned up thousands of child porn images, videos and 4,500 email exchanges with some of his online friends. Some of the images were so horrifying that they have been sealed.

Portway’s lawyer, Richard J. Sweeney, told reporters:

“Geoffrey lived in a fantasy world where he did live-action role playing, did things online unrelated to child porn and cannibalism. A lot of the chats that he had were, in his mind, fantasy. When they went out to the other people he was talking to, these other people actually had kids they were taking photos of. Geoffrey did not have any kids he had abducted, though he certainly talked about it.  There’s no evidence at all of Geoffrey being involved with any child or harming any child.”

Riiiiight. Listen, I’m usually okay with people’s fantasies – fantasy can be fun, add some spice to life. But this… this is not fantasy. This man had all the equipment to do exactly what he said he was going to do. The fact that he was caught before he could do it is something to be thankful for.

One of Portway’s cohorts, was a puppeteer in a Florida church. Ronald Brown has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for child pornography and conspiring to kidnap a child. He and Portway regularly chatted about their desires to rape, torture and eat children and were plotting to do just that when Brown was arrested. Brown worked at a church, for godsake! He promised, through his Puppets Plus website to provide “grins and giggles” for the kiddies. Can you imagine if he had been successful? Dear God/dess!

Federal prosecutors are seeking the harshest sentence possible for Portway. They wrote in a sentencing guideline:

“Portway has pled guilty to some of the most vile and heinous crimes known to our society. Portway’s collection is truly chilling and demonstrates a real risk based upon which the Court should sentence Portway to a substantial term of years in order to protect the public.”

A-freaking-men! Watch this video and thank whatever god or power you believe in that these federal investigators are doing what they are doing. And while you’re thanking that power, put in a word for the children they have not yet found.

Here is CNN’s coverage of the case:
