Library Used By Mexicans To Look At Drugs And Food Stamps Racist Councilman Says.

Louisiana Lafourche parish councilman says Mexicans, junkies and hippies are using the library to look at drugs and food stamps, wants to defund library. Image credit:

They’re teaching Mexicans how to speak English.

This is what a Louisiana Parish Councilman told the Tri-Parish Times, on November 13, 2013.

Send that son of bitch back to Mexico.

The councilman, Lindel Troups, was speaking about the Lafourche Parish public library system. (In Louisiana a parish is the term used to describe what many states refer to as a county).

Troups told the press Junkies, hippies and Mexicans “use the library to look at drugs and food stamps.”

Troups went on:

Them junkies, hippies and food stamps and all. They use the library to look at drugs and food stamps.

Troups, who is the current chair of the Lafourche Parish Council, would like to see the library system defunded. His statements were made in support of  the parish using some of the funding which currently appropriated to the library, to build a new jail, instead of supporting the 9 parish libraries.

Troups is leading an effort to defund the Lafourche Parish library system.

In 2011 Troups served as the chair of a group called “The New Jail Committee.” That committee was established to help secure funds for a new jail in Lafourche Parish. Given Troups’ personal views about the library system and the services that it offers to the public, it’s no surprise that it has become the target of a defunding effort of this sort.

The effort is being spearheaded by the overtly racist councilman, who seems more concerned about attacking minority groups than he is about raising funds for a jail. While Troups claims that defunding the library is the “only way to build a new jail without raising taxes,” he also made it clear that he has other reasons for wanting to defund the parish’s library system. He told the Tri-Parish Times that the library is doing “so many things that I don’t agree with.”

Bi-lingual programs and free internet access for the community are at the top of the list of things that Troups doesn’t like. It’s clear from his comments that Troups also doesn’t like minorities. I think it’s fair to assume that he really doesn’t like books or education either, a typical position among hateful, bigoted members of the republican party.

Maybe racists like Troups should use the library more often.

The sad thing is that education, especially bilingual education, actually helps reduce racism. An overwhelming number of studies have now linked racism to low IQ, and poor education, which ultimately leads to a lack of critical thinking and reasoning skills. It’s lack of education that creates small minded people with racist views like these.

It seems obvious that Troups could benefit from the services provided by the Lafourche Parish library system. Maybe he could use some of the books to educate himself on other cultures, assuming he can read. Maybe he could broaden his narrow views of minority groups by meeting and talking with people who are different from himself. Maybe he could use one of the library’s many computers to research the causes and cures of racism.

Will the people of Lafourche Parish demand Troups resignation?

The people of Lafourche Parish should not tolerate having a bigot like this as the Chair of their parish council. Defeating the proposed millage change, which will be up for a vote in November, isn’t enough. A government representative, whether local, state or federal, must represent all of the people that make up its voting block. How can this man be allowed to continue to represent the people of Lafourche Parish when he expresses outright hate toward many of the people in his community? Let’s hope the good people of this Parish join together to demand Lindel Troups resignation.
