Former congressman and House Majority Leader Tom DeLay (R-TX) has no idea how this country was founded. Apparently, the U.S. went astray when we allowed our government to be secular. According to an interview on the Global Evangelism Television Network (GETV), DeLay thinks we’ve forgotten that God founded this country, and that God wrote our Constitution.

Say what?

This is worse than absurd, even for Tom DeLay. He served in Congress for over 20 years, so he should know something of U.S. history. It’s bad enough that our elected members of the religious right think this country was founded on Biblical law. It’s also pretty bad that they see the word “creator” in the Declaration of Independence and automatically assume that the founding fathers intended for the U.S. to be a Christian nation.

Men, not God, founded this country on many different principles. The most important, and the central principle of our country, is freedom. That includes religious freedom. Tom DeLay’s idea that God founded this country and wrote the Constitution is disturbing at best, because it takes the “We are a Christian nation” myth to a whole new, terrible level.

Tom DeLay said, back in October, that we need to have a Constitutional renewal and revival. This, of course, would go hand-in-hand with whatever spiritual revival he sees going on in this country. God has, apparently, called for just such a revival to bring this country back to him.

Tom DeLay is now reminiscent of people like Sarah Palin.

He sounds as crazy as Sarah Palin, Betty Bowers, and that entire crowd. Sarah Palin has said that legislation should be based on biblical law. In 2010, she said, “Go back to what our founders and our founding documents meant — they’re quite clear — that we would create law based on the God of the bible and the ten commandments.” Which, of course, is not true.

We also have good ol’ Betty Bowers, whose “facts” about why we’re a Christian nation are pretty much nonsense. Sure, the Betty Bowers character is satire, but an awful lot of people don’t realize that.

But what’s most disturbing is that Tom DeLay wants this country turn back to what’s in the Constitution, yet he thinks the Constitution was written by God. His problems with us forgetting that God founded this country and wrote the Constitution are at serious odds with his stated desires.

Our founding documents say nothing about God.

Jesus, God, salvation, and the Bible are mentioned exactly zero times in the Constitution. The 1st Amendment specifically prohibits establishing a state religion. There is nothing in the Constitution that makes us a Christian nation. Did Tom DeLay’s God (and the god of others) forget to put that in there? One would think that if he did intend for us to follow biblical law, he would have specifically said so when he wrote the Constitution. And one would think people like Tom DeLay would realize that.
