George Bush Attends Summit For 50th Anniversary Of The Civil Rights Act - Makes A Penis Joke

Leave it to former President George W. Bush to commemorate the Civil Rights Act with a dirty joke. Seriously. This happened.

Leave it to George W. Bush to commemorate the Civil Rights Act with a dirty joke. Seriously. In case you missed it, four of the five living presidents recently spoke at the Lyndon Johnson Presidential Library as part of a summit honoring the 50th anniversary of the Act.  George W. Bush was the last speaker. He opened his talk with a joke about penises.

“Former presidents compare their libraries the way other men may compare their, well …,” he said, to laughter. “Just wondering how LBJ would have handled that. He was a funny guy at times.”

It’s true that Johnson was known for his sometimes crude humor. But civil rights is still a sensitive subject for the country. It seems especially insensitive for a guy like Bush to make such jokes at the summit. He’s not just the guy whose legacy is tainted by his apparent indifference to the suffering of poor African Americans during Hurricane Katrina. He’s also the guy who came into office via disputed election results in Florida where African American disenfranchisement may well have been the key to his win. (the meddling of the Supreme Court not withstanding)

Bush’s failure to appreciate the gravity of his place at a public event, even for an event involving who is likely the most uncouth president of modern times, tells us more about his own presidency than about the man he was there to honor. That Bush, a man who won due in part to the suppression of African American votes in Florida, would do so on the day to memorialize the civil rights act, well that is just disgusting.

With attitutdes like this, how it is that the GOP do not understand why so few blacks vote Republican?
