According to KTRK an 8th grade special-needs student in Pleasant Grove, Utah was forced to eat pizza from a trash can.

The 8th grader, Sierra Prince, is unable to make decisions about what she can eat by herself. Prince repeatedly asked the a school kitchen staff for a slice of pizza, Prince was told that there was no pizza left to be served. The kitchen staff employee then decided to give Prince a slice of pizza that was sitting at the top of a trash can.

Sierra Prince on top of being a special-needs child is also diabetic. In a video interview with the girl, which is embedded below, Prince told KTRK that, “I didn’t want to eat it but I was dosed for pizza anyway because I’m diabetic so I had to eat it.”

A district spokeswoman told KSTU “In this particular case, the lunch manager, not understanding everything, was told that pizza was what her insulin-that she had just received 15 minutes earlier, the (carbohydrate) count was for pizza. And her not knowing the particulars thought that was the only thing she could have and therefore made a poor decision.”

Nicole Cordoba, the mother of Sierra Prince told KTRK, “Sierra can’t make her own decisions on what she eats. That’s why they hired the helper. Not only one person made the decision for Sierra to eat out of the trash, 3 adults did.”

The lunch manager has been placed on administrative leave.
