Pro-Life? Religious Fanatics Trying To Stop Ebola Vaccine Research

In their never-ending quest to put the “life” of fertilized eggs and undeveloped fetuses over the actual life of actual human beings, the pro-life movement has started to put up a stink about two potential vaccines for Ebola, the disease that is currently paralyzing the ignorant with unjustified fear.

This week’s outrage is from “Children of God for Life” and they put out a press release condemning the use of fetal stem cells to develop a vaccine of Ebola:

“There is absolutely no reason to use aborted fetal cell lines,” stated Debi Vinnedge, Director of
Children of God for Life. “At least two other Ebola vaccines in development by the University of Texas
and GeoVax are using either Vero cells or chicken eggs. Likewise, there are therapeutic products such
as ZMapp (LeafBio) and TKM-Ebola (Tekmira) that are using plant or Vero cells”

Vinnedge wrote to the Department of HHS, the NIH, the FDA and NIAID pointing out that even the US
Department of Health listed other options such as yeast, insect, plant, bacteria, CHO, BHK, heLa and
COS cells, in their own patent, stating, “The attenuated [ebola]virus can replicate well in a cell line that
lacks interferon functions, such as Vero cells.”

“It is completely irresponsible of this Administration to put these problem vaccines on fast-track for
approval and ignore the fact that a massive number of people may very well refuse them. Why not fast
track a product that everyone can use in good conscience?” asked Vinnedge.

“There is absolutely no reason to use aborted fetal cell lines.” Apparently there is, or the pharmaceutical companies using them wouldn’t have bothered. It’s obviously not a matter of saving money because the company that gets a working vaccine first will make millions. Perhaps it’s because they felt the quickest and most efficient route to a working vaccine meant using stem cells? Sure, they’re not in it for the humanitarian aspect, but the result is the same: the quicker a vaccine is developed, the more lives will be saved.

But who cares about the thousands of people, including children, currently bleeding to death in West Africa and, very hypothetically, in the US? We have to save innocent fetuses!

As Right Wing Watch points out, these fanatics are anti-vaxxers as well, drawing a completely fictional line from vaccines to autism. Because sacrificing children on the altar of preventable diseases is a small price to pay to advance their extreme Christianist agenda.

Unfortunately for CGL, they picked the wrong battle to fight this time. “A¬†massive number of people may very well refuse them?” Not bloody likely. Fox News has the “pro-kife” right wing so terrified of Ebola that they would eat a live baby if they were told it would protect them from Obama’s evil plot to destroy America.

Once a working vaccine is developed, we’re going to mass produce it. Not for us, but for West Africa. You stop the disease at its source and it never reaches our shores again after this small (VERY small) flare up in Texas is stamped out. The funny thing to watch for after the hysteria dies down is that the right wing is going to flip out when we start spending tens of millions of dollars to make sure the vaccine is dispersed throughout the affected areas overseas. It’s one thing to spend millions to protect Americans from Ebola but why do we have to help¬†those people, too?! American vaccines for Americans diseases!
