Here’s What The Headlines Would Be If Muslims Were Responsible For Chapel Hill (IMAGES)

Here’s how the murder of three Muslim students in Chapel Hill would have been covered if the mainstream media applied the same rules to angry white men as they do to brown Muslims – complete with unfounded speculation, flights of fancy and assumptions:

Three Muslim Students Shot Dead During Terror Attack By Radical Atheist In Chapel Hill

A white, male, American atheist launched a terrorist attack on the quiet, residential area of Chapel Hill yesterday, shooting dead three Muslim students.

At 5:11 pm Tuesday, police received calls of gunshots from the sleepy, upmarket Summerwalk Circle in the Chapel Hill area of North Carolina.  Moments before, Deah Shaddy Barakat, 23, his wife Yusor Mohammad, 21, and her 19-year-old sister Razan Mohammad had been each been shot in the head, execution-style in their home. The killer, 46-year-old Craig Hicks turned himself in to local police shortly afterwards and is now detained.

The three victims were recently pictured together at the graduation of Razan, who ran a blog showing her interest in photography and art. She began her degree at North Carolina State University last summer, studying Architecture and Environmental Design, and her Twitter biography read: “I like buildings and other stuff.”

Deah, an avid American football and basketball fan, studied dentistry at UNC and volunteered with a charity providing emergency dental care to children in Palestine.

His wife Yusor studied Human Biology at the same university.

A look at the Facebook page of Yusor, or the twitter feed of Deah attest to the happy, positive lives that Hicks so cruelly snuffed out on Tuesday.

This tweet from Deah just two weeks ago is particularly poignant today:

The sleepy suburb where the three victims lived and died home to many graduate students and professionals of the University of North Carolina.  Residents are barely used to a car alarm going off, let alone a religiously-motivated terror attack.

Hicks was an atheist – or as the cover photo to his Facebook page announces – an anti-theist.

B011The page is full of anti-religious memes and statements from the likes of the Ms Betty Bowers, America’s Best Christian Facebook Page and arch-atheist Professor Richard Dawkins. Hicks, radicalized by militant atheists, went on to slaughter the three students in cold blood.

An example of the incitement to terror can be seen in the tweet below, which disparages Muslims as intellectually inferior.

Further incitement came after the recent deaths of cartoonists at French magazine Charlie Hebdo. Although the Hebdo murders were conducted by rogue gunmen who were known as ‘occasional muslims’ who drank alcohol and smoked pot, Professor Dawkins sought to link the killer’s faith to their deeds -stating that Islam was a uniquely violent religion.

B013However, in the wake of the Chapel Hill Massacre, the author of The God Delusion was quick to distance himself and atheism from the horrific violence, refusing to accept that radical atheism had any part to play in the violence.

This latest attack comes amid a growing, global trend of violence by white males against predominately female targets.

But that is not how the story was run.

No one in the media is asking when Hicks was radicalized, or by whom, or demanding the white, male, atheist community condemn the attacks – which were clearly motivated by his anti-religious sentiment.

And rightly so, Hicks killed these people because he is a violent man, of which there are many.  His atheism could have been replaced by misogyny, or homophobia, or religious extremism, or any other the other excuses people who wish to be violent apply to validate themselves.  The end result would have been the same, but we would be mourning different victims today.

We do not yet know exactly what the motivations were for the murder. So far, police have been tight-lipped, saying only that they believe the incident started as the result of an ongoing parking lot dispute. They are still investigating whether the killings amount to a hate crime.

Yet, if the ethnic and religious characteristics of killer and victims had been reversed – no such nuances would be made, and this would be rolling news in every paper, online and television news network.  Instead, it has been relegated to a page 10 murder story.

If Deah, Yusor and Razan had conducted this attack against Hicks in his neighborhood, things would be very different.  There would be correspondents from media outlets nationally and worldwide camped outside Hicks’ home, it would be reported as a terrorist attack and wrapped into a larger narrative of Radical Islam versus The West, every Imam within a thousand miles would be compelled to make a statement against the attacks or be accused of passive collaboration, security alerts would be issued across transport hubs and public buildings.  People on buses, trains, in taxis and offices would be busily discussing the problem of radical Islam. Comparisons would be drawn to such disparate groups as ISIS, Hamas, Boko Haram, and Al Qaeda.

But instead – silence. It was left to citizens, rallying at the Twitter hashtag #ChapelHillShooting to report the story in the context of anti-Muslim sentiment which has been nurtured and fed by the like of Dawkins and Fox News.

This was the front page of Fox News this morning. The terrorist attack at Chapel Hill is highlighted by a red box.  This is the level of priority given when victims of terror are brown, and the terrorist is white.

It is outrageous that these three young people, with so much promise and potential ahead of them, have been shot down like dogs for nothing but their faith.  The senseless tragedy of their deaths is compounded by the nauseating hypocrisy of our media, which refuses to acknowledge any terror not committed by brown guys with beards. No race, religion or political belief system is more predisposed to violence than any other.  If you believe otherwise, you have been duped.

The entire team at Addicting Info would like to extend our sincere and heartfelt condolences to the friends, family and loved ones of Deah, Yusor and Razan as they face a grief none of us would wish to face.  We stand with you.
