Open Carry ‘Activist’ Taunts Cops, Puts School On Lockdown: Even Gun Nuts Think He’s Nuts (VIDEO)

An open carry “activist” provoked a heated confrontation with cops outside a school, causing terrified teachers, students, and administrators to go on lockdown.

The Detroit News reports it all started around 11:00 a.m. on March 5, when an open carrier walked by Lamphere High School in Madison, Mich. with his shotgun and a video camera. When he got to the school property, police said they received “about a million 911 calls.” The school went on lockdown for over an hour, until police “determined the man was exercising his right to open carry and was not a threat.”

Officer Carey Spangler told reporters:

“We had a citizen exercise his right to open carry, and he chose to exercise that right near the high school. He has since moved away from the area.”

But this doesn’t tell the whole story. The open carrier — who remains unidentified, but who goes by the YouTube handle Nunya Beeswax — posted his open carry “walk” and his exchange with the cops on YouTube. Instead of putting Nunya Beeswax in a flattering light, the video reveals him as belligerent, obnoxious, and trying to pick a fight with the cops.

Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in Michigan posted a clip from Nunya Beeswax’s video that starts after neighbors and school staffers call 911 and police confront him about his open carry “walk.”

First the police asked, “So, how long are you going to be out here, sir?” To which this open carry gun nut replied:

“Oh, the funny thing about you’re asking me a question is, I’m not going to answer it […] Anything I say can be held against me in a court of law, right?”

Police made it clear that they didn’t plan to arrest Nunya Beeswax, but he pushed on.

“Are you going to shoot me? […] That badge on my chest gives him no more rights than I have. You work for me and the tax payers, right?”

When the police officer said he just wanted to have a “conversation,” the open carry gun nut sneered:

“No, I’m trying to talk to you, tough guy […] We all know y’all are chompin’ at the bit to put something on me.”

The cops finally shrugged their shoulders, got in their cars, and let the open carry guy walk up to the school. By then, the doors were firmly locked.

This open carry guy went too far, even for other gun nuts.

So what’s the story behind this? Open carry is legal in states like Michigan, Ohio and Texas, and some gun nuts are eager to assert their rights. A popular way for open carry “activists” to do this is by walking through communities with their big guns and their video cameras. When the neighbors freak out and call 911, the police come and the open carriers video tape their chats with the cops.

In most cases — as with Michigan’s Hell’s Saints — the open carriers are calm, cheerful, and unfailingly polite. They very nicely ask if they’re doing anything to break the law and remind Police that they have a legal right to open carry. The police then reluctantly send them on their merry way.

But Nunya Beeswax went too far even for other open carry folks. Shave Hudson — who caught Nunya Beeswax on video while driving by, and who is also pro-gun — expressed his concerns to WXYZ 7:

“It’s a waste of police resources, honestly. And there’s no reason to be getting a bunch of kids scared right now.”

Plus, Hudson believes open carry has a time and place:

“[This] makes us look a little crazy. It makes people scared. There’s a time and a place to do this type of thing.”

The pro-gun blog Bearing Arms angrily weighs in:

Law enforcement officers were diverted, and school was disrupted, because this “gentleman” insisted on open carrying past a high school, seemingly with the express intent of getting a rise out of authorities and making a public spectacle out of himself.

Bearing Arms proclaims that those who exercise their right to openly bear arms should be “responsible” and not scare the crap out of people or hang around schools. Plus, this kind of trolling could trigger laws that clamp down on open carry.

And sure enough, an MLive! editorial from March 8 demands, “It’s time to ask why we allow open-carry guns in schools,” after a man named Joshua Wade caused a ruckus when he brought his gun to a school performance in Ann Arbor.

In a different post, MLive! explains that Michigan allows people with concealed carry permits to open carry at schools, while banning them from concealed carry on school property.
