Israel Spied On United States-Iran Negotiations, Leaked Details To Derail Peace Talks

It appears that our “ally” in the Middle East wants war so badly they will stop at nothing to scuttle the nuclear deal with Iran to keep it from beginning any kind of nuclear weapons program. Because what could be worse for Israel’s virulently racist neo-con government than a working peace accord between Iran and six of the world’s major powers (The U.S., U.K., China, Germany, Russia and France)?

Via International Business Times:

Senior White House officials have learned that Israel was spying on closed-door talks between the U.S. and other world powers about Iran’s nuclear program, according to the Wall Street Journal. Israel’s snooping was part of a broader campaign by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to build a case against the deal, the report said.

Now, before you fly into a rage over an ally spying on the United States, you should be aware that every country spies on every other country, including their allies. In fact, the only reason we know that Israel was spying on us in this particular instance is because. . . we were spying on them:

American officials discovered the breach when they spied on Israeli communications, which contained information about the deal that the officials believed could only have come from U.S. lawmakers briefed on the topic, according to the Journal. Officials from the Obama administration, which has worked to push the nuclear deal with Iran, were reportedly upset by the fact that Israel used the intelligence to attempt to turn American lawmakers against the deal.

“It is one thing for the U.S. and Israel to spy on each other. It is another thing for Israel to steal U.S. secrets and play them back to U.S. legislators to undermine U.S. diplomacy,” a U.S. official said, according to the Journal.

That last part is where the problem lies. Israel is ostensibly an ally and here they are spying on the United States, in effect, for the Republican Party. Those are not the actions of an ally, those are the actions of a highly partisan political player seeking to undermine our country.

Israel, of course, is feigning innocence but after Prime Minster Benjamin Netanyahu’s shameless display in front of Congress and his last-minute appeal to blatant racism and warmongering to win his election, can we really put anything past him or his government?

Netanyahu’s government seems to working overtime to squander and all goodwill between the United States and Israel. Even many American Jews are becoming deeply disillusioned with how Israel is behaving. Yes, the right-wing will always support Israel (gotta fulfill those Biblical prophecies, after all) but without the support of the Democratically controlled White House and the soon-to-be-Democratically-controlled-again Senate, Israel will find itself increasingly isolated on the world stage. And that really WILL leave Israel vulnerable.
