Josh Duggar Of ’19 Kids And Counting’ Reported As Sex Offender When He Was Younger

It appears the 19 Kids and Counting star, and head of the very conservative Family Research Council, Josh Duggar, has a bit of a sordid past.

Back in 2005, the eldest son of the Duggar clan was investigated for underage sexual abuse, and it was apparently his father, Jim Bob, who turned him in to the Arkansas Police.

Josh Duggar was 17 at the time of the incident, but charges were never brought forth because of something even weirder. According to InTouch:

“The state trooper who originally took the report about Josh shortly before 2005 never followed up. That state trooper was later convicted on child pornography charges and is serving a 56-year prison sentence.

“When the state trooper ran into trouble, someone from the Arkansas State Police alerted the Child Abuse Hotline about the Duggar situation that had been sitting inactive. That’s when the Crimes Against Children Division and Springdale Police Department got involved. By then the three-year statute of limitations had passed and it would not have been possible to pursue prosecution of Josh if the allegations warranted, so the investigation was discontinued.”

Apparently, Josh had been investigated multiple times for sexual offenses against five victims, all who were minors. One of the offenses was “forcible fondling,” while others were seen and investigated as felonies.

“Jim Bob and his wife, Michelle, were interviewed for the report, which revealed Jim Bob first became aware of his son’s alleged abuses in March 2002, when he was told by a girl that Josh, then 14, had touched her breasts and genital areas on multiple occasion while she was asleep.”

His parents, instead of reporting their son to the police, decided to just discipline him themselves. These incidents happened far more than once, and eventually Jim Bob decided to send Josh to a “Christian program” that would work with his son on his problems. However, Michelle Duggar, Josh’s mom, admitted that he didn’t seek counseling, but rather was with a family friend.

How did the family secret get out?

“The family secret finally came out because of the discovery of a letter written by a family friend with knowledge of the incident. The letter was placed inside a book which was later loaned to a member of the Duggar family’s church.

In 2006, the Duggar family was scheduled to appear on Oprah Winfrey’s talk show. Prior to their appearance, an email was sent to Harpo Studios to alert them of the alleged sexual abuse.

The studio then faxed the letter to the Department of Human Services hotline, which led to the Springfield police opening an investigation. But this probe came to an end because the three-year statute of limitations had expired.”

Josh Duggar is currently the Executive Director of The Family Research Council, and known “family” advocate speaking out against gay marriage and a number of other issues.

The father of three should apparently deal with the skeletons in his own closet before judging anyone else on their actions. The Duggars are known for not being sexually active at all until marriage. It’s no wonder they’ve worked hard at keeping this a secret.

Needless to say, this isn’t all that surprising. It’s usually the most religiously outspoken who have the most to hide. Thou doth protest too much.

UPDATE:

Duggar has now resigned from the Family Research Council after the release of his offenses.
