Josh Duggar’s Dad Ran For Senate, Said Incest Should Be Punishable By Death (IMAGE)

When news broke about Josh Duggar’s past sexual assault of several minors (including his sisters), Christian parents Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar were the first to defend their son. The couple brushed off the criticism and said in a statement:

“Even though we would never choose to go through something so terrible, each one of our family members drew closer to God. We pray that as people watch our lives they see that we are not a perfect family.”

The Josh Duggar situation has been followed with loads of ironic information that support the eldest Duggar’s incestuous actions, but this is perhaps one of the strangest. It’s recently resurfaced that before Duggar dad Jim Bob was known for his role on reality TV show 19 Kids and Counting, he had a career in politics. Jim Bob served as a member in Arkansas’ House of Representatives before running for U.S. Senate in 2002 (he lost to Sen. Tim Hutchinson). During that campaign, Jim Bob had something very interesting to say about incest – that it should be punishable by death. Here’s the text, taken straight from Duggar’s cached campaign page:

“Q. What is your abortion position, and specifically, where do you stand on rape, incest, and threat to the mother’s health?

A. If a woman is raped, the rapist should be executed instead of the innocent unborn baby. Adoption is an option. Many couples would love to adopt and are waiting for a baby. Abortion has been and always will be the destruction of an innocent child. Rape and incest represent heinous crimes and as such should be treated as capital crimes. The developing infant committed no crime and should be allowed to live. In the unlikely event that the life of both mother and baby would both be lost (for example, a tubal pregnancy) all should be done to save the life of the mother.”

Here’s the page, in all of its glory:

Perhaps Jim Bob changed his stance on capital punishment for incest since his own then-teenage son was arrested for sexually assaulting his younger sisters between 2002-2003. Over a decade later, Josh Duggar seems to be alive and well, although he’s had to give up his precious position at the anti-gay, pro-life Family Research Council since his actions have been made public.

Jim Bob hasn’t yet spoken about his former attitude toward incest, although he has previously said that his son’s familial abuse caused him “to seek God like never before.” Could that possibly be because he publicly stated in his campaign that incest should be punishable by death?
