Huckabee’s A Creep: I Wish I Were Trans So I Could Watch Girls Take Showers (VIDEO)

Like many of his peers in the Republican Party, presidential hopeful Mike Huckabee makes no secret of his disgust and contempt for transgender people. Earlier this year, Huckabee laid it all on the table during a religious conference he was attending where he expressed both derision and longing for the trans community.

As Gawker noted, Huckabee framed transgender people as little more than opportunistic perverts hoping to see “your 7-year-old daughter” while she is in the bathroom. Like many of Huckabee’s ideas, this one is ancient, bigoted, and scientifically false. Nonetheless, Huckabee trudges on, remarking:

“For those who do not think that we are under threat, simply recognize that the fact that we are now in city after city watching ordinances say that your 7-year-old daughter, if she goes into the restroom cannot be offended and you can’t be offended if she’s greeted there by a 42-year-old man who feels more like a woman than he does a man.”

But while Huckabee uses an unfounded anecdote to highlight how disturbing trans people are, he goes on to really demonstrate that it is Huckabee, and Huckabee alone, who doesn’t seem right in the head.

“Now I wish that someone told me that when I was in high school that I could have felt like a woman when it came time to take showers in PE. I’m pretty sure that I would have found my feminine side and said, ‘Coach, I think I’d rather shower with the girls today.’ You’re laughing because it sounds so ridiculous doesn’t it?”

They’re laughing because it has got to be uncomfortable sitting there listening to a major politician say that he would have pretended to be a transgender person in order to peek at his high school classmates’ naked bodies. Unlike being trans, there is a major problem with that: It’s sexual harassment.

It’s another example of how Huckabee may not be the dumbest Republican candidate (although it’s debatable), but he is certainly the most sexually confused. The sad sack drops hints almost every time he can. In 2014, Huckabee raised eyebrows and triggered gag reflexes across the country when he gave a talk telling women that “they are helpless without Uncle Sugar coming in and providing them a prescription each month for birth control because they cannot control their libido or their reproductive system without the help of government.” He didn’t mean all women, of course, just the floozies in the Democratic Party who think their bodies shouldn’t be regulated by Mike Huckabee.

And he clearly has a weird hang up about Beyonce. She may be one of the most successful (and feminist) performers in the world, but Huckabee thinks she’s too sexy for President Obama’s teenage daughters to listen to. Why? Who knows, maybe she makes Huckabee feel funny things in his chastity zone. Maybe he can’t control his libido.

Huckabee is a telling example of a much more systemic problem within the “family values” sect of the conservative movement. The reactions that Caitlyn Jenner (who many maddeningly insist on still referring to as “Bruce”) has received from the right-wing after she posed for photos in Vanity Fair are vile and juvenile. Like Huckabee, the consensus from the “sex is a sin” crowd is that trans men and women are simply doing this to try to check out other people’s private parts. But we should flip that because isn’t it more true that the adult-sized children over at Fox who can’t stop talking about Jenner’s body are the ones who are obsessing?

As ever, Huckabee’s thought experiment shows more about him than it does his intended victim. As far as we know, Jenner and the rest of the trans community have no interest in secretly checking out naked teens in the shower – but Huckabee, by his own admission, sure as hell does.
