A California Republican put her insanity out in the open last week when she blamed abortion rights for causing California’s severe four-year-long drought.
During the California ProLife Legislative Banquet, GOP state Rep. Shannon Grove served as the keynote speaker and used her time to claim that God is punishing California with a drought because the state supports abortion rights for women, and she says the only way to magically end the drought is to suppress women’s reproductive rights.
Referring to the Bible as “the infallible word of God,” Grove used Texas as an example of how stomping on a woman’s right to choose will somehow cause rain.
Texas Republicans passed a 20 week abortion ban in 2013 despite overwhelming opposition by women across the state. So far, the law has closed several women’s health clinics all on the scientifically dubious notion that fetuses feel pain at 20 weeks of development.
“Texas was in a long period of drought until Governor Perry signed the fetal pain bill,” Grove declared. “It rained that night. Now God has His hold on California.”
“I believe –and most Americans believe –that God’s hand is in the affairs of man, and certainly was in the formation of this country. The Founders put God in the center of this nation by recognizing Him as a giver of our rights. Is this drought caused by God? Nobody knows. But biblical history shows a consequence to man’s actions; we do know for sure that California’s water shortage crisis has been compounded by liberal politicians’ poor decisions – not properly managing our water resources and refusing to build water storage for decades.”
One Facebook user replied by pointing out that when Ireland legalized same-sex marriage a double rainbow appeared, while Texas has banned same-sex marriage and has been experiencing terrible floods.
Here’s a screenshot of the awesome response.
The fact is that many factors have contributed to California’s historic drought, from agriculture to the bottled water industry to climate change to people wasting water for swimming pools and green lawns. But legal abortion is not one of those factors. Grove is just using the drought as an excuse to push her religious beliefs and attack abortion rights. And she is the perfect example of why it’s a good thing that California has term limits.
