Church Shooter Dylann Roof Had Planned Massacre For Months, According To Roommate

As conservatives continue to ignore the fact that the 21-year-old domestic terrorist was draped in the same cloth as many of their own cronies, more information is coming out about the white supremacist that took the lives of nine African-Americans Wednesday night.

Dalton Tyler was Dylann Roof’s roommate. He told ABC News:

“He was big into segregation and other stuff. He said he wanted to start a civil war. He said he was going to do something like that and then kill himself.”

He also confirmed that it was Roof’s parents who purchased the gun for this right-wing nut. Reuters is also reporting that Roof’s father gave him a .45-caliber pistol for his birthday this year. Carson Cowles, Roff’s uncle, told reporters:

“I actually talked to him on the phone briefly for just a few moments and he was saying, ‘Well I’m outside target practicing my new gun.'”

John Mullins, who was an acquaintance from high school said:

“I never heard him say anything, but just he had that kind of Southern pride, I guess some would say. Strong conservative beliefs. He made a lot of racist jokes, but you don’t really take them seriously like that. You don’t really think of it like that. [But now], the things he said were kind of not joking.”

I know, I know. Many will say we shouldn’t continue to talk about the killer. Many will say that he shouldn’t receive this kind of attention. But, here’s the thing. There are others like him. Other people with deep-rooted hatred of people because of the color of their skin, and they would like to carry out an act just like he did. And at this very moment, they can legally acquire guns in states like South Carolina.

South Carolina was given an “F” for gun safety by The Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence due to the permissive gun laws in the state.

Look, I don’t advocate that our government should go on a major gun grab and take all the guns. I think most of us are realists and know that isn’t possible. But, we need a more common sense approach to a problem that exists in this country on a national level. I “get” that gun lovers want to hunt and collect and let their 9-year-olds play with Uzis, but this hobby and irrational fear are causing much larger issues than we can handle. Something must be done.

We cannot continue to arm individuals who are obvious dangers to our society. Domestic terrorists should not be permitted to legally acquire weapons, and when there are few regulations on the private sale of guns – we are making it far too easy for people like Dylann Roof to grab their gun, enter a church, and kill people.

Conservatives often say “guns don’t kill people, people kill people.” And that’s exactly why we need more gun laws to keeping weapons out of the hands of certain people. Because some people simply do not need to own a weapon.
