Pope Francis has come out swinging with remarks that will likely enrage gun manufacturers and anyone who invests in weapons. He’s talking to you, NRA.
On Sunday, the pontiff delivered off the cuff statements concerning whether or not Christians who manufacture weapons and invest in them are actually Christians.
Well, they’re not. They’re just hypocrites, Pope Francis suggested as the crowd of young people in Turin, Italy cheered.
Pope Francis’ prepared remarks consisted of talking to young people about war, trust, and politics before setting his speech aside to slam those who make the weapons that have killed so many in war.
“It makes me think of … people, managers, businessmen who call themselves Christian and they manufacture weapons. That leads to a bit a distrust, doesn’t it?”
In addition, Francis also took a shot at “Christians” who invest in guns, telling the audience that “duplicity is the currency of today … they say one thing and do another.”
Pope Francis’ comments come just days after right-wing terrorist Dylann Roof murdered nine African-Americans in a South Carolina church.
Since the tragedy unfolded, conservative “Christians” have desperately tried to defend gun culture even as the death toll continues to rise in America. President Obama has called for gun control measures while conservatives scream that more guns are the answer to solving gun violence.
Even the deaths of kids hasn’t caused conservatives to change their minds. Instead, they continue to do the bidding of the National Rifle Association, a conservative organization that receives tens of millions of dollars from the gun industry to lobby for less gun regulations and more gun purchases.
And since that could be considered a form of investment, NRA executives such as Wayne LaPierre aren’t real Christians either.
Every time a mass shooting occurs, the gun industry tries to scare people into thinking that they need a gun. That’s why conservatives have been calling for a “guns everywhere” policy. If everyone has to buy a gun, it lines the pockets of the NRA, the gun industry, and the politicians pushing the policy. And whenever more gun violence kills a group of kids or a group of churchgoers, the gun nuts repeat the same idea over and over again that more guns is the only solution. One wonders if they actually hope for such shootings to occur just so they can make a windfall from the bloodshed.
Well, it appears Pope Francis is sick of the bloodshed and he is sick of the gun industry and its supporters profiting from it. So he is calling them out as the hypocritical “Christians” they are and you can bet that conservatives are going to whine about this for weeks to come.
