Why Is Mike Huckabee Campaigning And Fundraising In Israel?

If you’re wondering why former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee would say something as despicable as calling the Iran nuclear deal the equivalent of leading Israelis to the “door of the oven,” it may have quite a bit to do with the fact that Huckabee is actively campaigning (for President of the United States) in Israel (which is not a part of the United States). Israel’s opposition to the Iran Deal means much more to a guy like Huckabee than his own government’s involvement in its creation.

It doesn’t help that Huckabee is getting desperate back home. Never a favorite, the former governor is seeing dismal polling numbers, an almost non-existent campaign, and scant traction with voters. For some reason, when he does things like defend admitted child molester Josh Duggar or insist that an 11-year-old rape victim should be forced to have an abortion, the American people aren’t swarming his campaign offices with their checkbooks open.

Instead, he’s focusing on Israel, a country which does not care about his abortion policy (he can’t touch their extremely liberal one) and probably doesn’t know what a “Duggar” is. Instead, they want to hear him slam the Iran Deal, and Huckabee is more than willing to oblige.

According to the Washington Post:

Huckabee, less than a month after he said the Iranian nuclear deal will “take the Israelis and march them to the door of the oven,” will visit Israel for a series of meetings and discussions, some involving the deal.

“We’re going to be doing some fundraising but more importantly, I’ll also be visiting with a number of officials and discussing the Iranian deal,” the Republican presidential candidate said Sunday on CNN’s “State of the Union.” “I think it is the most dangerous situation that we face, not just for the Middle East but for the rest of the world for a long time. This is essentially arming and equipping a terrorist state.”

In a way, it’s not surprising that Huckabee would be willing to sell out America for some Israeli shekels. For years now, it has started to become increasingly obvious that he is turning to snake oil to enrich himself at the expense of the loyal fans he’s picked up by saying awful things about the people he disagrees with. His principal income these days comes from selling things like survivalist gear to Doomsday Preppers who listen to his radio show. His latest attempt to pander to Israel just shows that he knows a good deal when he sees it.

Other Republicans are finding Israel a great place to run for president as well. Gov. Scott Walker has billed himself as a serious contender in the Republican primaries, but that didn’t stop him from bailing on Wisconsin to head to Tel Aviv. Last May, he and his wife visited the country to gladhand with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. While there, he reportedly told Israeli officials that if he should become president he would ramp up military aid to the country (which already receives billions of dollars in gear and weapons each year from the U.S.). You know, a “you scratch my back, I’ll give you more tanks and tear gas” sort of arrangement.

It’s no secret that Republicans are trying their hardest to derail the nuclear deal with Iran. Despite the agreement being hailed as a historic victory for peace and a much-sought after attempt at cooling tensions in a region where America has been hated for years, Republicans have lost their minds over it. There was the embarrassing and borderline treasonous letter a collection of Republican senators sent to Iran. And when Netanyahu visited the United States as a thinly-veiled insult to the Obama administration, Republicans fell over themselves to show that they worshiped him, hanging on every word the Israeli prime minister said. The message is clear: For many Republicans, hatred for Obama means betraying the country’s interests to Israel.

For a while this was all done very hush-hush. Openly courting one country while running to be the leader of another one isn’t exactly a winning election strategy. However, Huckabee and Walker aren’t even trying to hide it anymore. They are so desperate to win, that they’ll let the Israeli government to play kingmaker in the United States 2016 election. No matter the price.
