Conservative Radio Host: Let’s Use Immigrants As Slave Labor To Build Southern Border Wall (AUDIO)

An Iowa radio host, who has become so influential in conservative circles that during election season Republican candidates flock to his home to kiss his ring, has decided the best way to solve illegal immigration is to enslave the immigrants themselves, using them as forced labor and paying them nothing.

On his right-wing radio show, Jan Mickelson proposed that the best way to get undocumented immigrants out of the state would be to ask them to self-deport or become “property of the state” to be used as unpaid slave labor to – not kidding – build a massive wall on the US/Mexican border.

“[A]nyone who is in the state of Iowa that who is not here legally and who cannot demonstrate their legal status to the satisfaction of the local and state authorities here in the State of Iowa, become property of the State of Iowa.’ So if you are here without our permission, and we have given you two months to leave, and you’re still here, and we find that you’re still here after we we’ve given you the deadline to leave, then you become property of the State of Iowa. And we have a job for you. And we start using compelled labor, the people who are here illegally would therefore be owned by the state and become an asset of the state rather than a liability and we start inventing jobs for them to do.”

His plan was inspired by – who else? – Donald Trump. The current Republican frontrunner has been saying some truly disgusting things about undocumented immigrants and it seems to have fired people like Mickelson up. Like Trump, he feels like America could use a massive wall built across the entire stretch of the country’s southern border. Unlike Trump, Mickelson seems to notice that building said wall would cost billions, take years, and an almost unimaginable army of workers. To solve that, Mickelson thinks the slaves America suddenly acquired would work nicely.

“We say, ‘Hey, we are not going to make Mexico pay for the wall, we’re going to invite the illegal Mexicans and illegal aliens to build it. If you have come across the border illegally, again give them another 60-day guideline, you need to go home and leave this jurisdiction, and if you don’t you become property of the United States, and guess what? You will be building a wall. We will compel your labor.”

If that sounds like the kind of “peculiar institution” that America fought a bloody civil war to get rid of 150 years ago, then Mickelson wants you to reassess your values. After a caller noted how similar to slavery this whole thing sounded, Mickelson demanded to know “what’s wrong with slavery?”

Mickelson is a disgusting individual, but don’t expect any Republicans to step up and rightfully condemn him. Many have been sucking up to him in exchange for positive coverage for their campaigns. In February, Bloomberg wrote a somewhat fawning piece on Mickelson and the sway he has over conservatives, noting that he was one of the “most powerful people in the Republican Party.”

For Republicans who have consistently demonstrated their lack of a backbone, standing up to a guy like him – even when he’s advocating for slavery – is not an option. As Media Matters noted in May, nearly every single Republican candidate has stopped by Mickelson’s program to gain favor.

Their silence says it all. For a group that doesn’t hesitate to take unsubstantiated potshots at President Obama by accusing him of weak leadership, the cringeworthy way they crawl on hands and knees to grovel at the feet of a disgrace like Mickelson is a sight to behold.

We’re living through a surreal time for the Republican Party. An organization that prides itself as being the “party of Lincoln” now can’t even speak out when one of their own advocates bringing back slavery for fear of upsetting Republican voters. An ugly strain of xenophobic hatred runs through the conservative movement. Every time Trump opens his mouth to slander an entire ethnicity or nationality, his poll numbers skyrocket. As the dehumanization continues, it’s no wonder that a certain segment of extremists are getting to the point where enslaving the groups they hate doesn’t seem like an abhorrent option.

The party of Lincoln? Not even close.
