A group of about 3,000 Tea Party members and Oath Keepers are holding a rally on Sunday to garner support to split the state of New York into two “autonomous regions.” The group has a delusional belief that they can form a new state that will be a conservative utopia of freedom.
The group has named their Sunday rally “Let My People Go” and are asking that upstate New York be renamed “New Amsterdam,” while New York City, Long Island, Rockland and Westchester Counties would keep the New York name. The Divide New York State Caucus has also said they might push to have the upstate region become part of Pennsylvania, but that would require Congressional approval.
The group released a statement about the rally on Sunday that explains why they want to secede from the rest of the state:
“Why secession? Secession is about reclaiming the economic opportunities Upstate has lost and restoring the liberties Upstate residents once enjoyed. Downstate has dominated Upstate for decades and Upstate has no future in a state controlled by New York City’s needs and desires.”
The have expressed a desire to have a more conservative government, because they are unhappy with Governor Andrew Cuomo’s gun and fracking legislation. SCOPE NY, one of the main supporters of the movement, are currently attempting to have Cuomo’s gun legislation, the SAFE Act, repealed. The Governor signed the law after the Sandy Hook shooting that claimed the lives of 20 children and 6 educators. The secessionists also do not approve of Cuomo’s fracking ban. They want to be able to freely pollute water with that pesky Democratic governor getting in the way.
Here’s a picture of the “New Amsterdam’s” boundaries:
The organizers of this movement seem to think that seceding is going to create some sort of paradise for gun-loving, fracking patriots, but Gawker reports that it would be an economic disaster for them:
If supporters are serious about splitting from the depraved metropolis below them, that also means splitting from their largest source of revenue. In 2009 and 2010, New York City and the rest of the non-New Amsterdam counties paid out $12 billion in tax dollars to struggling counties upstate. Good luck getting along without it.
It’s just like Teapublicans to not think things through.
The fact of the matter is, their desire to break away from the rest of New York has no actual, rational reasons behind it. They want to create a homeland for themselves that is ruled by a “token state government” of all far-right conservatives. This new land will be filled with Liberal-hating, gun nuts who hate minorities.
It’s fair to assume they will not welcome minorities with open arms, especially when Oath Keepers are well-known for showing up in Ferguson on the anniversary of Mike Brown’s death with loaded assault weapons. If you ask them, I’m sure they’ll say brown people are totally welcome.
