Fun Fact: Even Elizabeth Warren Could Replace Boehner As Speaker– If He Leaves, That Is

John Boehner appeared on Face the Nation this Sunday to talk about bailing on the House Republicans and how he will transition.

“I don’t want to leave my successor a dirty barn,” Boehner said. “I want to clean the barn up a little bit before the next person gets there.”

Too late, pal.

But it turns out the Speaker might have some additional stalls to muck out.

“I was planning on leaving at the end of last year. When my friend Eric Cantor lost his primary election in July of last year, it was clear to me that I just couldn’t leave, that I had to provide a transition for the next leaders. I planned on serving through this year. And on November 17, I was going to make an announcement. . .”

Now, he’s saying he won’t leave Congress until the list of things he has to do is done. Despite setting an October 30th deadline, Boehner said:

“The Senate is expected to pass a continuing resolution next week. The House will take up the Senate bill. We will also take up a select committee to investigate these horrific videos that we have seen from abortion clinics…”

The reality of this all happening in the next 30 days? Congress has a history of infighting within the GOP, and doing two things at once isn’t exactly their strong suit. What happens if, on October 30th, the conservative wing doesn’t have the head of Planned Parenthood on a platter?

Here’s the most interesting part, however. Did you know anyone could be Speaker of the House? Article I, Section 2 of the U.S. Constitution states:

“The House of Representatives shall chuse [sic] their Speaker and other Officers.”

That’s it. That’s the only requirement to be the Speaker of the House. Anyone could be Speaker if they’re elected by a majority. It could be Senator Elizabeth Warren, or even Jon Stewart, if they wanted. Even John Boehner if he leaves Congress. Granted, that’s never actually happened in our history, but it’s fun to think about. Who would you choose?
